In the play “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles a man tries to find his true identity and he ends up suffering. A plague has hit Thebes, and an oracle said that they have to find the former king's murderer. The current king, Oedipus, pursues information about the crime and the process he discovers something terrible. A prophecy that Oedipus received in his youth, that he would kill his father marry his mother and have children with her, appears to be coming true. When the truth is finally revealed. Oedipus stabs out his eye, his wife/mother kills herself, and Oedipus gives up the throne. The themes of guilt, innocence, and punishment recur throughout the story.
