“I will seize fate by the throat; it shall certainly never wholly overcome me” (Ludwig van Beethoven). The character Oedipus in Oedipus Rex can be compared in a multitude of ways, but with similarities comes differences. Oedipus’s disastrous discovery of the truth can be compared to Elton John’s song “I Know the Truth.” His problem solving and intelligence can easily be correlated to the movie The Martian, and the historical figure Joseph II of Austria has very similar ways of ruling as Oedipus does (Fate Quotes).
Elton John’s song “I Know the Truth” accurately describes Oedipus’ situation throughout the story. The song can easily be seen as though Oedipus is saying the lyrics himself. “How have I come to this? How did I slip and fall? How did I throw half a lifetime away. Without any thought at all?” This stanza in the song can be perfectly compared to the moment when Oedipus killed Laios. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus describes that moment as “But as this charioteer lurched over towards me I

He often calls them “My children” (Sophocles 160) and he sympathizes with them during a time of plague, “….my spirit groans for the city…” (Sophocles 162). Also, when Creon comes from the oracle with obviously bad news, Oedipus cares for his people he says to “Let them all hear it. It is for them I suffer more than for myself” (Sophocles 163). This caring nature of Oedipus is in close comparison to the way Joseph II cared for his people during his reign. Joseph II loved his people and achieved several reforms during his reign, such as giving the ability to religions, other than Catholicism, to worship freely. By doing this, and other reforms, Joseph II began limiting the power of the Catholic Church. Also, he put in place an increase in the Vienna police, which the city desperately needed. All these things, Joseph II did in protection and care of his people (Gebhardt 3, Joseph II, Oedipus Rex, Sophocles

The last trait that made Oedipus a tragic hero was his transfiguration. Transfiguration is a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state. Oedipus became tranformed or became a better person when he finally accepeted the things that he done and ended uo dealing with his problems even though he was blind because he gauged his eyes out. For example when Oedipus said this Blind who now has eyes, beggar who now is rich, he will grope his way toward a foreign soil, a stick tapping before him step by step. That quotes is basically saying in my opiniion that even tho he did do things in his past that he isnt proud he is still going to take it day by day and accept the things he done and move on from them.…

Oedipus does genuinely try to be a good King, as shown in the Prologue, and has succeeded so far. He easily feels threatened and becomes paranoid, shown by how his second concern about the killer is his own protection, and how he quickly accuses Creon and Teiresias of plotting against him in Scene 1. He tries to help the people and is willing to do take responsibility, “Then once more I must bring what is dark to light,” (Prologue), but in the end it seems that he is more concerned about his own outcome, stated when he talks about his parents (Scene 2) and when he argues with Creon (Scene 1). 7.Oedipus is a tragic hero because he’s trying to fix the evil he unknowingly caused. The tragedy of his past has come full circle to leave him broken with remorse.…

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord.”…

The Tragic Destiny of Oedipus Oedipus the king by Sophocles is a distressing play filled with transgression, grief, and tragedies. The unfortunate incidents that the tragic hero, Oedipus, goes through invoke catharsis in the readers. He has been prophesied a dreadful fortune and feels as though “...no one suffers more than [him]” (Sophocles 27).Foretold destiny cannot be derailed as fate will always interfere and insure that the prophecy is fulfilled. Moreover, every tragic hero has a tragic flaw; rashness and temper are two of the major ones that lead Oedipus to make poor decisions. In addition, many humans use ignorance as a shield to protect themselves from a harsh reality and therefore restrain themselves from the light of true knowledge.…

In the story of Oedipus, there are several examples that show man’s relationship with the truth. The oracle predicts the truth about the future of Laius, Jocasta, and Oedipus. Killing his father and marrying his mother are both examples of what the oracle predicted about them. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles shows that, in the case of finding truth, if a man starts in search for the truth, he must find the whole truth, but if a man never starts in search for the truth, he can stay ignorant of the truth. The story of Oedipus shows that the better of the two is staying ignorant of the truth.…
