Oedipus Movie Analysis

Throughout the movie, there are several references to other stories and characters throughout Greek mythology. However this attempt is for the most part inaccurate and includes main characters that have absolutely no contact with Hercules or warps their characteristics and meshes characters/stories together simply to create the plot Disney wanted. Some quick examples before going into depth with the main characters include references to the tragedy of Oedipus, the plagues and troubles in the city of Thebes because of his marriage to his mother, and of course the famously quoted line "...And then that, that play! That Oedipus thing...Man, I thought I had problems(Hercules, 1997)"! Half way through the movie famous statues of the gods and other …show more content…
This is completely inaccurate because according to the myths, he was turned into a flower and still remains at the river of Styx(Classical Mythology, 334). He also wasn 't a god, therefore he would certainly not have been celebrating with the gods on Mount Olympus. And finally, at the beginning of the film a reference is made to Charon, the man at the gate of the Underworld who takes souls across the river, who is rowing Hades around the river of the dead. Now we will examine the main characters Disney chose to portray in their film and their relationships to Hercules and the accuracy to the actual myth. The narrators for the film are five sassy gospel Muses who are extremely sympathetic to the protagonists and the events that occur to them, as well as drool over "Hunk-ulies". In Greek Mythology, there are nine Muses who are the daughters of Zeus. Disney definitely portrayed their sassiness, however they were much more extreme in the myths and how they handled challenges to their expertises in music and the arts, but they were in no way associated with Hercules(Hercules …show more content…
In the movie the Fates are three older than life sisters who share an eye who cut the threads of life and possess the knowledge of the past, present and future. They reveal a prophesy (after a lot of flattery) to Hades regarding his evil plan and how Hercules must be defeated if it is to succeed, which is when Hades sends his minions to take care of the "little sunspot(Hercules, 1997)". This is a very interesting depiction because Disney has combined two different myths into one character. The Three Fates, or Moerae, did in fact cut the threads of life but Disney combined them with the sisters of the Gorgons, or the Graeae. These sisters shared an eye and a tooth and were extremely old and had the gifts of prophesy of past, present and future(Greek Mythology Link). The last character I would like to compare is the Centaur, Nessus. In the movie, he tries to rape Megara until Hercules heroically comes to the rescue and defeats him by running him into the rocks of a waterfall(Hercules, 1997). In the myth, these two do square off, but Nessus is shot by an arrow dipped in the poison of the Hydra after Nessus tries to rape Hercules second wife, Deianira. Although the movie is inaccurate about Megara and Hercules ' first meeting, it is almost exactly how Deianira and Hercules meet and fall in love(Classical Mythology,

    J. Michael Straczynski, the American writer and producer, said “[t]he point of mythology or myth is to point to the horizon and to point back to ourselves: This is who we are; this is where we came from; and this is where we're going. And a lot of Western society over the last hundred years - the last 50 years really - has lost that. We have become rather aimless and wandering.” Today when people think of the mythology of Rome, Greece, or Egypt, they might think of statues in museums or parks or distant unrelatable characters.…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…

The stories of Greek mythology have had many interpretations and many meanings throughout the years. There are also many similarities and differences between stories from the past; Just like in the plays Bacchae and Hippolytus. Both Aphrodite and Dionysus' motivation and behaviors in the plays Bacchae (Dionysus) and Hippolytus (Aphrodite) were similar, in that, they both wanted to restore honor to their names and they used the family to teach the one who disrespected them to show respect to a god/goddess. But on the other hand, the human perceptions of these gods were far different from each other. First off, the motivation for both gods is very similar, they both wanted to make sure they were well respected among the mortals and that the…
