Oedipus Complex Personality Analysis

In the book, three different personality types are distinguished and characterized by different traits based on peoples’ fixations of them during development in the Oedipus complex (Cervone & Pervin, 2013). These fixations are past failures that could result from too little or too much satisfaction from a single source. Those described with an oral complex are categorized as greedy, narcissistic and disregard others’ feelings and concerns. This person is mainly focused on their own wellness and satisfaction and how they can be instantly be instantly rewarded. Anal personalities are known as someone who is constantly searching control. Symptoms are described as a hidden way of returning to a reoccurring fixation that earlier caused satisfaction, which is also known as regression. Phallic males are competitive, hungry for success, and always trying to maintain a masculine persona, while women who deal with a phallic personality type are sexually motivated, while also innocently naïve and submissive to the male. Personality types help researchers exam peoples’ differences and explain what motivates their behavior, emotions, and feelings. The creation of these classifications also support Freud’s earlier idea that certain stages in development are associated with anal, oral and phallic personality types and are responsible for creating and shaping a person. However it is more modernly researched that most people consist of different traits that may fall under more than one personality type. Because peoples’ thinking and emotions are ever-changing and dynamic rather than simply flat, the traits they convey may vary between different situations. The extremities of these sometimes occurring traits are not extreme enough to classify me as simply that certain personality type because they do not last long enough and occur frequent enough in my day to day living to define my overall self. The study would also help support the idea that I, nor does anyone else, simply do not portray a personality trait because we fall under the personality type. However this phenomenon is ultimately explained by the ten types of psychosexual personality types that are so broad and common among the instinctive individual, that it is impossible for them not to display at least one of them from time to time, ranging in varying extremes. This article emphasizes the importance in differentiating a person’s own individual traits from basic and instinctive that everyone displays during different times and situations. My individual characteristics may include a few traits from each of the three personality types, including oral tendencies of being demanding, anal power seeking behaviors, and phallic like flirtations. However, because I consist of these wide range of qualities and the combination of my other qualities that may not fit within a certain personality type, it would be impossible to label my personality as just one
