A. The significance of being a hero in real life or in literature is the development of certain elements of their characters that bring out the qualities that allows those around them to follow faithfully; without doubt or question. Beowulf and Odyssey both have their own individual paths that they have taken in their quests, during these quests that are able to establish to those around them through their acts the establishment of their hero status.

Odyssey is able to show that he greatly values those men around him and treats them very well to develop this loyalty, while his men do the same in return.
A. When Odysseus arrived with his men at the Lotus Eaters land, several become intoxicated from the eating of a lotus plant. This intoxication caused them to lose any thoughts of returning home. This is where Odyseuss decides his loyalty to his men is very important and persuades them to leave the island and board the ships home.
B. Upon arriving at the island of Aeaea, Odysseus’ men are turned into swine by Circe. So in an effort to gain the true return of his trusted men, he asks Circe what is needed of him to have this done where she insists on him eating and drinking with her.

Beowulf’s men were chosen by him to accompany him to the Danish shores where he would attempt to slay the monster Grendel. While it is true the men are his kin, he shows no emotional attachment right from the beginning. “Beowulf chose the mightiest men he could find, the bravest and best of the Geats” it seems he simply picked the strongest men who would go with him and just left. He chose none based on loyalty, background, or friendship, but simply the strongest. This also says something about Beowulf’s character. He’s a man who values strength and power above all else, sometimes even to the point where it clouds common sense.
2. Beowulf exhibits many obvious heroic qualities. “Heroic conduct especially as exhibited in fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end (Merriam-Webster). These along with more restrained discreet actions serve to define him as both a great warrior and leader. Beowulf shows both intelligence and patience.
3. Beowulf begins as many epic tales do, by introducing the hero. The author tells the reader of how Beowulf has trekked oceans and slain monsters; right from the beginning it is made obvious that Beowulf is no ordinary man. However, with any tale, the hero must have an adversary, an evil that must be overcome. In Beowulf’s case, he has three, the hideous monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the foreboding
