Odysseus Decisions In Homer's Odyssey

In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels a long journey back to his home, Ithaca, after fighting in the Trojan War for 10 long years. However, I strongly believe Odysseus himself was the reason that he witnessed a long journey returning to his homeland. If he hadn’t made specific decisions, I’d expect that Odysseus would be able to return earlier. In the epic, I believe that three major decisions could’ve helped Odysseus sail back towards home sooner if he had chosen the right choice.
One of the significant decisions is Odysseus’ accord to rest on the Cyclops’ island and approach the Cyclops’ cave. If Odysseus hadn’t settled on greeting Polyphemus, he wouldn’t have lost men and they wouldn’t have been trapped with no way out besides relocating the boulder. Suddenly, Odysseus thought of a plan to escape the cave where Polyphemus would remove the boulder, but wouldn’t be able to catch Odysseus and his men from escaping. Odysseus’ idea was to make Polyphemus blind, so he would move the boulder and not be able to catch Odysseus and his men. Odysseus’ plan succeeds by making a spike out of an olive tree, charring the spike, and launching it into Polyphemus’ eye. Polyphemus wakes up and yells that Nohbdy ruined

However, if Odysseus hadn’t taunted Polyphemus and revealed himself, Polyphemus wouldn’t have placed a curse on their journey back home. Therefore, Odysseus himself caused the fact that his men didn’t return home and he doesn’t return to Ithaca sooner.
In the end, Odysseus himself was his only curse. If he had many different decisions, he would’ve been able to return way sooner than he did. Later in the Odyssey, Odysseus drifts on to the kingdom of the Phoenicians and meets King Alcinous. King Alcinous helps Odysseus home and therefore, ends Odysseus’ journey back home to

Odysseus of Ithaka encounters many challenges throughout The Odyssey, including the aftermath of the Trojan War, the Lotus Eaters, the Seirênês and more. Though he faces multiple challenges, Odysseus fails to learn from his mistakes and does not develop nor grow in character after the Trojan War. He does not evaluate the faults he has made in order to avoid the same issues in the future, and instead continues his journey with the belief that he is not the one at fault for the complications he and his crew encounter. Odysseus is a static character due to the fact that he does not jump at the opportunity to change, and instead remains to be a man who yearns to go home, and fails to learn from the lessons the Gods are aiming to teach him. The household in Homer’s The Odyssey can be considered the basis of Ancient Greek society, as all societal recognition and conventions stem from this unit. Any actions committed that attempt to ruin the integrity and tradition of one’s household are therefore considered severe crimes that must be wholly resolved by equally severe vengeance. Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus recognize the deep importance of their family household, and possess the persistent need to maintain its integrity and tradition. The gods advise these mortals in their shared struggle, even consistently intervening in their conflict to ensure that the restoration of their household is achieved, suggesting that both gods and men serve a societal order that must be preserved…

Poseidon punishes Odysseus by keeping him away from his homeland, Ithaca. “For his sake Poseidon, shaker of the earth, although he does not kill Odysseus, yet drives him back from the land of his fathers,” (I: 74-75). After the Trojan War ended, all Odysseus wanted was to return home to his family with his companions. However, the path he took led him to the land of the Cyclops, and he ended up having to kill Poseidon’s son to continue on his journey home. More specifically, throughout the Odyssey, the ultimate goal is to make it back to Odysseus’s home, in Ithaca. The reason for Odysseus’s aspiration to go home is to rejoin his family which he has longed for twenty years. Odysseus’s feelings may be inferred at the moment he meets his son, Telemachus, as shown in the text, “Held back too long, the tears ran down his cheeks as he embraced his son... Then, throwing his arms around this marvel of a father, Telemachus began to weep. Salt tears rose from the wells of longing in both men” (The Odyssey, “The Meeting of Father and Son,” 931).…
