Odysseus’ worst decision was when he visited Aeaea, Circe’s island. Through this decision, the king had made many mistakes whether it be due to desire or his ego. Once on Circe’s island, his men were turned into swine, and Odysseus saved his men, but it cost him another stop from returning to Ithaca. The king spent an extended amount of time on the island; he was forced to take a different route home, otherwise he would have been sailing through the seas if the nymph’s island was avoided. Odysseus had made a poor decision by exploring Circe’s island, given that he risked the lives of his comrades and this encounter drifted his journey farther away from home. They become enthralled as they hear the goddess singing and they call out to her. They are lured into the palace and Circe uses her magic to turn the crew into swine. Eurylochus sees his comrades as animals and hurries back to Odysseus in order to inform him. “Eurylochus ran to our swift black ship/to tell the disaster our poor friends had faced,” (10. 269-270. If Odysseus had not sent half his men to explore the island, they would have been able to avoid the Circe encounter, and continue back home to Ithaca after leaving the island. But if Circe still crossed paths, Odysseus should have sent less than a quarter of his men as there would have been less to save from Circe’s magic. This was proven to have been a bad decision, as the long-awaited trip back to Ithaca was delayed with new obstacles in the way. At home, Penelope stayed faithful to Odysseus for the entirety of time while the king consciously went to bed with Circe. More time passed and Odysseus eventually felt the need to travel home; he begged Circe to let him and his crew leave. This would not have occurred if Odysseus simply ignored Circe’s intimate request, and embarked on his journey straight away. Given that Odysseus put his friends' lives in danger and that this encounter caused his quest to divert further from home, he had taken an improper decision in exploring Circe's island. An important lesson which Odysseus may have gotten out of this experience was to avoid negative temptation. Odysseus and his crew had lost track of time as they had enjoyed tables of food and drink, which had tempted them to stay at Circe’s palace longer. After spending a year on the island, which provided good shelter and wellbeing for him and the crew, Odysseus had only distanced himself from Ithaca and his wife Penelope.
