Odysseus Villains In Homer's The Odyssey

Their songs would have attracted Odysseus and his crew in if they had not been warned by Kirke before hand and blocked out the crew’s ears. This would have prevented Odysseus from returning home. The next monsters are the shades. These are the spirits that Odysseus talks to in Hades. The shades are respectful to Odysseus lining up to talk to him but in the end they all started to come at the same time. The shades came “in thousands, rustling/ in a pandemonium of whispers, blown together,/ and the horror took me that Persephone/ had brought from a darker hell some surian death’s head” (XI.751-754). Odysseus escaped the shades but if he hadn’t he sould have never returned back home, or most likely ever leave Hades. Another villain is the Lotos …show more content…
Some of these villains include Kalypso, Kirke, Poseidon, Helios' herd, and Odysseus' crew. Kalypso kept Odysseus in her cave with her making him immortal, but even though she cared for Odysseus for years, Kalypso kept Odysseus away from his family and home. Kalypso “fed him, loved him, sang that he should not die/ nor grow old, ever, in the days to come” (V. 142-143). Kalypso was taking care of Odysseus so she saw no reason that she should have to let him go. But,Odysseus missed his family, and his home, and Kalypso didn’t want to let go of her lover of many years. Odysseus was trapped with Kalypso. Kalypso also helped Odysseus return home, even though she didn’t want to. It may also be argued that Kalypso is not really a villain for helping Odysseus, and caring for him for so long, but she did keep him trapped in her lair when he wanted to return home. Odysseus want to leave and go home, but Kalypso kept him until Hermes forced her to let Odysseus leave. Even when she was being told to let him leave she was angry at Hermes and lectured him about how male gods are allowed to have lovers but she isn’t. Another villain in The Odyssey is Kirke. Kirke lives one the island Aeaea. When Odysseus' crew stumbles upon her lair she turns the crew into swine. When Eruylokhos came back and told the rest of the crew, and Odysseus went to rescue them. Along the way Hermes gave him a flower called molu to keep her magic from working on him. …show more content…
The villains and monsters in The Odyssey are actually very similar to villains we read about now, or even just people on our everyday lives. In real life you met people who seem like a bad person at first, or just from what you hear from other people but then actually help you later on in life, like Kirke in The Odyssey. In life you can also met people who you are perfectly nice too and they’re just mean back to you anyways, like Polyphemus. Another example is someone that’s mad at you for something that you did a long time ago, like Poseidon is about what happened to Polyphemus. You can also have people in your life that just aren’t very considerate of other people, like the suitors. There may be someone who continually unintentionally hurts you like Odysseus’ crew. You can also met someone like Kalypso were they’re not ready to move on but you are. In stories today we have all of these people, and some actual monsters in more fictional books. So, this means that even though The Odyssey is hundreds of years old, some parts of the book can still be applied to modern life, even the villains in the

Odysseus often decides to take actions such as dealing serious damage or death. In many situations, like with the suitors, he kills all of them, just so he can once again be the king. Odysseus was the true villain between Polyphemus and Odysseus because he blinded Polyphemus for his own selfish cause. He also took many other ruthless actions, like ordering his men to sail towards Scylla instead of just deciding that going home was less important than staying alive. If he had decided to stay in safety, his men would have lived and would have been…

Similarly to the Cyclops’ terrifying appearance and actions, after Odysseus slaughters the suitors, the old Nurse literally describes Odysseus as “terrifying” (22: 422). Now, all these similarities make Odysseus and Polyphemos sound almost identical to each other but, Odysseus is even more of a monster than Polyphemos. A common theme in The Odyssey, is nostos, “returning home,” and oikos, “home.” The majority of the epic poem is driven by Odysseus’ lack of understanding that he needs to just go home. The fate of Odysseus is to suffer an arduous journey home; the Fates do not appear in the epic but instead use the will of the gods to act this out upon Odysseus. The opposition to Odysseus’ safe journey home comes in the form of the god Poseidon who is angered with him for blinding his son. While his patron goddess Athena does everything in her power to help him reach his native land. The mixture of the actions of the two deities is what causes Odysseus’ fate to come to fruition. One could also assume that Athena admires Odysseus because he possesses so many of the traits that the goddess is the pillar of.…
