A tragic hero is describes as a character who makes a judgmental error that leads to destruction. Odysseus is a tragic hero because after fighting in the ten year war he puts his men and himself in risk by entering the home of the Cyclops. Before leaving the island after stabbing the Cyclops' eye his cocky personality takes over and tells the Cyclops that it is him, Odysseus and he lives on Ithaca. Odysseus shows his heroic characteristic when he tells the Cyclops "Cyclops if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded tell him Odysseus, raider of cities took your eye: Laertes' son whose home's on Ithaca!" An example of this flaw is when the Sirens call out to Odysseus saying “Come this way, honored Odysseus, great glory of the Achaians, and stay your ship, so that you can listen here to our singing; for no one else has ever sailed past this place in his black ship until he has listened to the honey-sweet voice that issues from our lips; then goes on, well-pleased, knowing more than ever he did; for we know everything that the Argives and Trojans did and suffered in wide Troy through the gods' despite. Over all the generous earth we know everything that happens” (Book: 12). This flaw causes Odysseus to put him and his men in risk because the sirens make men forget about their wife, children and life.
