Odysseus: The Egotistic Hero In The Incredibles

The interpretation of a hero varies through most stories. The most common type of hero has an exceptional trait or power, but has one major flaw. The exceptional trait or power can range from super strength like in “The Incredibles” to extreme cleverness shown in the Odyssey. Both heroes still have one major flaw in “The Incredibles” the hero lives in the past and in the Odyssey the hero is egotistic. Heroes contain exceptional traits along with a major flaw. Odysseus is a hero because of his cleverness and courage, but still has flaws that people are able to relate to.
As Odysseus is in the giant's cave, he is able to figure out how to escape with minimal casualties. As the Giant asks him what his name is he is clever enough not to use his real name. Thinking ahead, he responds, “Nobody-that’s my name” (book 9 line 410). Odysseus is thinking ahead trying to outwit the giant which will pay off in the future when the giant calls him by name. Soon he finds a way to blind the giant to escape his wrath, but he does not know how to get the stake close enough to him without getting caught. To make sure that the Giant was not aware of what he was doing, he got him extremely drunk. As the Giant is laying on his back Odysseus

He has a high level of intellect and has an abundance of courage. His intellect is shown as he is fighting the giant and courage when he enters Circe’s halls for the first time. He has flaws as well, he is overly egotistic and is sometimes overconfident. His ego is shown to harm him as he is escaping the giant and his over confidence got six of his best men killed when passing Scylla. These traits make up a hero because it gives the hero a fantastic trait, but a major flaw to let the reader relate with them.
