Reading about The Odyssey has shown to be an enriched source of information of which it could show how people in the ancient world used to live and show what they believed in. We learn about Odysseus, a man hated by gods, trying to persuade Nausikaa daughter of King Alcinous. Different attempts of persuasion were used in his speech in order to help Odysseus in his quest to persuade Nausikaa into helping him get supplies. One of his attempts was to persuade Nausikaa with a talk about her family. “ If you are one of earth’s inhabitants, how blest your father, and your gentle mother, blest all your kin. (165-67). Odysseus first attempt is shown to be a strong one, because it uses psychology in his favor. By talking about her family, Nausikaa tend to show more focus to what Odysseus will most likely to say. Talking about a delicate topic could potentially increase the focus of the listener. By doing so, Odysseus can maintain a good conversation in which his listener will be hearing …show more content…
We can see different phrases in his speech that give away this theme of desperating. For example, “Mistress, do me a kindness!” (188). What this phrase mean is simply calling out for help. We also see this theme throughout all of the speech. “Direct me to the town, give me a rag that I can throw around me, some cloth or wrapping that you brought along.” (191-94). In this passage, Odysseus is asking for directions and also cloth in order to clean himself and to have a clean pair of cloth to wear. He is being also a very religious individual. He odly uses the words, “And may the gods accomplish your desire: a home, a husband, and harmonious.” (194-195). This passage is important because it shows what poor people do when other give them stuff. Normally, when a person gives something to someone they normally say stuff like “God Bless You”, or “May God Bless your family, and your life.” Words like this can be similar to those of

Odysseus’s use of compliments was probably the least effective due to the fact that Nausikaa had a bold heart so the flattery he gave fell on closed ears. The one compliment that stood out the most and probably was the most effective was when Odysseus says Nausikaa’s family is blessed on page 103, lines 165-67, “ If you are one of earth’s inhabitants, how blest your father, and your gentle mother, blest all your kin.” Odysseus shows hospitality through this compliment which makes him appear more appealing to Nausikaa as hospitality means a lot to these people. Odysseus then goes on to state that the man who goes on to claim Nausikaa as his bride will be more than blessed with his life. This compliment once again shows Odysseus’s hospitality by him being courteous towards not only Nausikaa, but also to her unknown future husband.…

If the suitors were to find him they would surely kill him because there are 40 suitors and only one of him. “God! As a former suitor of Helen, Odysseus is a part of a pact made between the other suitors to “defend [Helen] from all injury and avenge her cause if necessary” (Bulfinch). With this pact in mind, King Menelaus “[calls] upon his brother chieftains of Greece to fulfil their pledge” (Bulfinch) and sends Palamedes to Ithaca to recruit Odysseus. Odysseus, however, “[is] very happy in his wife and child” (Bulfinch) and feels “a sense of duty [and]…

In “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus, King of Ithaca, must go through years of hard work to return home from the Trojan War and save his people. “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell represents the steps Odysseus took to deem himself a hero. The segments of “The Hero’s Journey” that reflected on Odysseus’ heroic nature were the Call to Adventure, Allies/Helpers, and the Tests and Supreme Ordeals. Odysseus traveled for 20 years away from his land to fight and protect his people, all while being forgotten and replaced. He proves his heroism by persevering, through the tremendous odds against him and saving his land from suitors.…

Nausikaa’s instructions to her father, Alkinoos’ palace is very symbolic as to why the Homeric society has been complex. As Nausikka’s says to Odysseus, “Go on past him [the king] and then with your arms embrace our mother’s knees”(6.310). Odysseus expects to speak to the king, but Nausikaa implies that he would have to speak to the queen and make a good impression with her. This is a great turn of events as we have seen throughout Homer’s epic poem that women do not carry power in Homeric society. Now that we are dealing with the queen she is in more power to decide Odysseys’ homecoming than the king himself, who just sits beside her and drink his wine.…

In the epic poem, the Odyssey, written by Homer, it tells of the amazing feats performed by Odysseus. He goes on impossible adventures for the average man; He successfully leads his crew through the sea, or does he? Even though Odysseus may show that he is clever, he also shows that he does not listen, is very temperamental, and is untrustworthy; Because of these character traits, he cannot be an effective leader. To begin, Odysseus shows multiple times that he does not listen to his crew. His crew tries to warn him of the multiple dangers that were to come from his actions, yet he refuses to listen, putting several of his crew’s lives in danger, and even killing a few of them.…

The old nurse Eurclyeia, the Swineherd, and the Cowhered were amongst the most loyal; they continue to carry out their daily tasks, as if their beloved master is still at home. This symbolizes what type of man and leader Odysseus is. He is kind-hearted and believer in rewarding the loyal. He treats his servants like family, even though they are lower down on the social class ladder; as if this wasn’t enough reward, Odysseus also rewards his servants with food and other treasures (like…

What if the person one looks up to or longs to return is not the person they expect that person to be? In the Odyssey, by Homer, this is the case for Odysseus. He is not the man everyone thinks he is. To begin with, the epic the Odyssey is about the return of the “great” king of Ithaka, Odysseus, from the Trojan War. He spends ten years fighting the war and is now on his way home where he is creating tension that is prolonging his return to Ithaka.…

Throughout this voyage, Odysseus constantly speaks and thinks of returning home to Penelope and their son Telemachus, a thought that allows him to persist through all odds for twenty years. Odysseus’ absence from his household has left it unprotected and vulnerable to forces that might ruin its integrity, a great fear that makes his need to return home so urgent and strong, as Odysseus describes: “‘Yet, it is true, each day I long for the sight of home. If any god has marked me out again for shipwreck, my tough heart can undergo it. What hardship have I not long since endured at sea, in battle! Let the trial come’”(V.228-33).…

As Wolfgang Muller claims, “the fact that the narrator steps out of his role as a distanced teller of the story and directly addresses the swineherd, is an expression of sympathy and, perhaps, even love for this character.” When Eumaeus refers to Odysseus as his master even after his absence reveals his loyalty to him. Furthermore, by saying that his master would have ‘repaid’ him, it demonstrates that Odysseus is a good leader and that Eumaeus is showing xenia because it was a value he upheld. As a result, Odysseus is able to trust him and use his help in defeating the suitors. Homer illustrates another scene in which Eurycleia, another loyal Ithacan, recognizes Odysseus’ scar from when he was a child.…

Odysseus has been on a long journey trying to find his way home. On his journey Odysseus has changed into a man of loyalty, a man of hope, a man of honesty. Over the journey he experiences many battles that has made him the man he is today. In the Odyssey, Homer uses odysseus’s journey to show how one’s journey can change them as a person. All of the encounters that I have describe in my essay are some of the event that made Odysseus change. After, the encounter with the Kyklops, Odysseus went from island to island for many years encountering many dangerous situations, which eventually cast all of his man lives. All those year allowed Odysseus to change the way he is, to become more patient, cautious, and a person who planned before doing something. This extreme change was shown, when Odysseus was finally able to get home to Ithika. Instead of immediately going home to his palace and wife, he disguise as a beggar.…

Although not a prevalent character, Nausicaa assists Odysseus by giving him crucial advice on his journey although she does originally swoon for him. While many of the other women in the Odyssey don’t fall for Odysseus and show different forms of the masculine-feminine balance, Nausicaa shows a more traditional version. When she first sees him after bathing in the river, she compares him to a god. This attraction she feels towards him plays a critical role in why she helps him to be welcomed by her people. When Nausicaa and her maids first see Odysseus, the girls turn and flee, but after Nausicaa tells them that “running away at the sight of a man” (Homer 6. 204) is foolish, they lend him their help.…

You may think that a journey is a waste of time, but in reality we take journeys every single day at school or home or even with a team. The journey is taken to complete a quest. I believe out of the two of them that a journey is more important. The journey is traveling from place to place in search of the task at hand. It’s the most important because without the journey there would be no quest and journey is how to become the best person that you can be.…
