Odysseus is a great leader. He led his people through so many obstacles that they would have never gotten through if he did not help them. The only reason he couldn't save them was because of their own foolishness. He led them through the sirens by his commands and them listening to his plan. "Going forward I carried wax along the line, and laid it thick in their ears. They tied me up, then, plumb amidships, back to the mast, lashed to the mast, and took themselves again to rowing." He is such a great leader that he sacrificed him self to listen to the sirens while they didn't hear them. He also got them through Scylla and Charybdis. "but I sent them on toward Scylla, I told them nothing, as they could do nothing." His whole crew knew they had to listen to him because his leadership had been untested so far.

His cleverness could have been the key factor to the success he had on his journey. He convinced Polyphemus that his name was, "nohbdy" which sounds like, "nobody" so when the other cyclops ask what's gotten him stirred up he says what sounds like "nobody". "My name is nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everybody calls me nohbdy." After he confused the other cyclops and they couldn’t save him he needed to think of a plan to get out, so he did. He decided to ride out under the bellies of the cyclops' giant sheep. "Then slung a man under each middle one to ride there safely, shielded left and right."
