Odysseus and I have both needed to decide whether peer pressure is a positive or negative situation, before making a decision that could possibly help us to be more successful. For example, when Odysseus shot his “arrow through the iron axe-helve sockets, twelve in line” (946). He did this because the suitors were trying to seduce his wife into marrying one of them. Odysseus knew that if he shot his bow, and proved that it was him, he would be able to stop his wife from choosing a suitor. Additionally, Penelope was astonished that it was him when he told her of their bed; “ a trunk of an old olive grew like a pillar on the building plot… Their secret! As she heard it told, her knees grew tremulous and weak” (964). When Odysseus heard of the bed being moved, he became furious since he had grown the very olive tree that the bed was built out of. This made Odysseus angry because he labored for an extremely long time to create their bed perfectly, just as they wanted it. Likewise, every summer I participate in swim team, and I’m always afraid that I’ll forget how to do a flip turn or just become a worse swimmer in general. Furthermore, even though I know in the back of my mind that I will be just fine, I continue to feel the anxiety of messing up. Another example is when I was younger, I would walk on my toes all of the time. I thought that I couldn’t do it anymore, but I recently did it again and was surprised to see that I’d remembered how to do it.
