The Odyssey, an epic poem by Homer later adapted into a play by Simon Armitage, is a narrative depicting the journey of the greek hero Odysseus back to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War. His voyage spans twenty years, and throughout the course of his trip back home, Odysseus and his men encounter various obstacles that they need to overcome. Since Odysseus is essentially the leader of his crew, it is most often his responsibility to defeat the enemy and solve the problem at hand. At times, his actions could be classified as violent and unjust, such as him causing unnecessary conflicts with enemies and resorting to killing them. Nonetheless, Odysseus is still a war veteran, and has been exposed to this brutal style of solving issues for…

The hero cycle has long been a staple of legends and tales. Everyone knows the story; the pattern is practically set in stone and finds use from the classics of ancient Greece and Rome all the way to Star Wars. Odysseus is one of the earliest examples of the hero cycle. In Book 5, Lines 394-399 of his Odyssey, Homer offers the following simile: “And as welcome as the show of life again in a father is to his children, when he has lain sick, suffering strong pains, and wasting long away, and the hateful death spirit has brushed him, but then, and it is welcome, the gods set him free of his sickness, so welcome appeared land and forest now to Odysseus, and he swam, pressing on, so as to set foot on the mainland”. In this paper, I will argue that although the surface meaning of this passage is that the land for Odysseus is like the recovery of a sick father for a child, the deeper meaning is that the passage and other textual evidence indicate several times that Odysseus is more like the father. This comparison anticipates the end of the book when Odysseus…
