There is no mortal half so wise; no mortal gave so much to the lords of the open sky" (Book One lines 84-86). This shows that Odysseus is highly thought of among other …show more content…
Odysseus has done many things that make him hero, but Odysseus is very cocky and has gotten him and his crew into many problems and some being costly and that could have been avoided. However, no matter how cocky Odysseus gets and how many more things he gets himself and his crew into he never fails to try his best at saving his men and doing anything he can to be successful. An example of this is when Odysseus decides to go inland at cyclops island when his men advise him otherwise and they end up getting stuck in the cyclops cave. But, Odysseus being the epic hero he is uses his smarts and skills to escape the cyclops by stabbing it and saying “my name is Nobody: mother father and friends, everyone calls me Nobody” (Book Nine lines 394 – 399). It follows the adventures of the Greek king, Odysseus, as he travels through the Mediterranean, trying to return home. The protagonist of an epic is called the “epic hero”, and he must exhibit certain characteristics to fulfill this title: he must represent the values of his culture, be either aided or hindered by the gods, and demonstrate one or more character flaws. Anyone who is successful in completing a gallant and courageous act, can be considered a hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is an admirable hero because he uses strategy instead of strength to overcome several obstacles. Homer presents this in Odysseus’s use of deception, the route he chooses to get home, his choice of words and his use of disguises. To overcome a hurdle one may wish for a great deal of strength. Yet when Odysseus came in contact with a giant Cyclops, he never questioned nor focused on his lack of vitality.…

This illustrates that Odysseus is a hero because he saved some of his men, including himself, by blinding the Cyclops. Accompanying that, Odysseus is heroic because he is smart. The text states, “I tied my men under their bellies and grabbed hold of the largest ram of all” (Homer 28). This example proves that Odysseus is a hero because he thought of a way to escape from the Cyclops, which was to tie themselves under the bellies of the sheep. Furthermore, Odysseus is heroic because he is powerful.…
