Odysseus In The Odyssey

Going to West Ithaca High School has taught me various things about the Greek Culture. The great hero, Odysseus, has also taught me many lessons through his example. The Odyssey teaches about hospitality, patience, and vengeance.
Being welcoming and a good host is important to the Greeks. Everyone should be welcome whether they are a boy or a girl or familiar or a stranger. When Odysseus wasn’t welcomed by Antinous because he was a beggar was considered very rude. In Greece, not only should the guest be welcomed, but they should also be provided with food and shelter. Odysseus’s own home had been taken over by suitors. These suitors were taking advantage of their hospitality and the fact that Penelope and Telemachus didn’t have the hearts

The Odyssey, an epic poem by Homer later adapted into a play by Simon Armitage, is a narrative depicting the journey of the greek hero Odysseus back to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War. His voyage spans twenty years, and throughout the course of his trip back home, Odysseus and his men encounter various obstacles that they need to overcome. Since Odysseus is essentially the leader of his crew, it is most often his responsibility to defeat the enemy and solve the problem at hand. At times, his actions could be classified as violent and unjust, such as him causing unnecessary conflicts with enemies and resorting to killing them. Nonetheless, Odysseus is still a war veteran, and has been exposed to this brutal style of solving issues for…

The Odyssey shows Homer’s penchant for community throughout, but is ultimately demonstrated by the fate Penelope’s suitors meet for their defilement of proper communal standards. Odysseus is painted as a fair and kind King of men as well as a brave and effective warrior. His fairness is not only demonstrated via the dialogue of men in the poem, but in his dealings with those he encounters. Odysseus and his men go ashore on the island of the Cyclops and despite the urging of his men not to do so, he takes a party to the dwelling of one of the creatures. He is curious to see if they will be met with barbarity or hospitality.…

Heroes are people who are above average people who go out of their way to help other people like veterans, men and women who risked their lives so that we could be able to do the things we enjoy in life. Even veterans were around in Ancient Greece. Even Odysseus was a veteran he fought in the trojan war 3000 years ago, and in other times fighting to get back home to his family. A perfect example of a veteran is odysseus from the Odyssey. He travels all around greece on his way from the trojan war.…

In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus is finally released from Calypso after seven years. Odysseus proceeded to lead his men on his way back home to be reunited with his wife, Penelope. Today, Homer is globally seen as a great leader for his men, but his clear demonstration of pride, daringness, and his pettiness made him a horrible leader. One of the biggest weaknesses for leaders is having too much pride, and Odysseus has more than enough of that, as shown in the Cyclops. Odysseus’ crew was caught by a Cyclops, but when he got away he decided to insult the Cyclops (The Cyclops. 476).…

If it weren 't for Greek hospitality and the great generosity of others, Odysseus may not have ever made it home. The greeks believed that all guests were godsent and were to be treated with courtesy, meaning I’ve got your back and in return you’ve got mine. While it 's a choice whether one wants to comply to this code, the benefits and consequences of that choice are beyond one’s reach and affect not just the choosing party but other party in the same way. Greek hospitality has a positive outcome to both parties when demonstrated,…

“The Odyssey”, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, follows King Odysseus of Ithaka on his twenty year journey home from the Trojan War. Throughout the epic poem Odysseus must face many obstacles, some inevitable, and some the result of human mistakes. Odysseus demonstrates his arrogance time and time again, manipulating people to get what he needs to overcome these obstacles with little thought to how much their generosity will cost them. Odysseus uses his end goal to justify taking advantage of other people’s hospitality because Odysseus’ hubris won’t allow him to see his own flaws.…

Penelope was very kind to her potential suitors, after Odysseus went to war. She did not oppose them to staying in her home with her and her son. Hospitality meant more in the Homeric era, and it helped Odysseus on his long travels away from home. Hospitality was mainly shown because the common people wanted to please the gods. There were times when Odysseus was not shown hospitality which was during his journey back from the Trojan war.…

Throughout the Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus learns some valuable lessons while conquering obstacles during his treacherous voyage home. If one were to describe the qualities of a hero, what would they say? Quick-wittedness, generosity, and kindness would be common answers, but few people, if any, would answer perplexedness, selfishness, and maliciousness. Odysseus, undoubtedly a great hero, portrays flaws when surrounded death while on his journey home. Death in The Odyssey often overshadows Odysseus’s heroic glory and brings about key flaws in his characterization such as perplexedness after the crewmen kill the cattle of Helios, selfishness after Elpenor’s death, and maliciousness when he murders the suitors. Odysseus is perplexed as to what to do after he has discovered his men have killed the cattle of Helios; Odysseus is unsure of the actions he should take because animals,…

When Odysseus arrives back in Ithaca he was disguised as a beggar to test his wife Penelope’s loyalty to him, and to make sure he does not get killed by the suitors that have taken over his estate. His appearance is that of a dirty beggar, and he appears homeless and rough. While this was also true when he appeared at the island of the Phaeacians, he had Athena’s spell and dream to make his arrival more convincing. On the other hand, Eumaeus decided to take in Odysseus without any hesitation despite his appearance. When odysseus first arrives in his house, Eumaeus follows the same custom as Nausicaa and says, “Come to the cabin.…
