In book nine, the problem that Odysseus must face is eluding the evil cyclops, Polyphemus's cave. In order to be successful in his journey, Odysseus must use intelligence, bravery, and the help of gods if he wants to return to Ithaca. The story begins when Odysseus is on his way after getting past the sirens. As Odysseus is heading back Poseidon is alarmed, Poseidon then sends strong 9 day winds to blow Odysseus off course. This leaves Odysseus and his crew helpless to which ever way the winds will take them. When Odysseus and his crew land they find themselves on a strange island, As they explore the island they come upon a large cave. Odysseus and his crew then come upon shore weary of their surroundings, they then enter the cave and with a crash a cyclops named …show more content…
Polyphemus then puts a giant rock at the opening of the cage, leaving them trapped. As Odysseus and his crew stares in awe at the cyclops, Polyphemus then asks them a question. "Strangers, who are you? What sea route brought you here? Are you trading men, or wandering the sea at random, like pirates sailing anywhere, risking their lives to injure other men." Odysseus then replies, "We are Achaeans coming back from Troy and blown of course bye various winds across vasts tracks of sea. So, good sir, respect the gods. We're here as suppliants to you, and Zeus protects all suppliants and strangers..." Enraged by this the cyclops voraciously takes 3 of Odysseus crew men and eats them. Odysseus and his crew await in the cave every day to find out who will be eaten next. One day Odysseus has an idea, while the cyclops is vulnerable we will take a sharp piece of olive tree wooden stake and jab it into the cyclops eye. Soon the time comes, they prepare by sharpening the stick, and then burning the tip so it will harden. Odysseus then takes the spear and jabs it into the cyclops eye.
