In Book Five of The Odyssey, Because the Gods will is to make Odysseus voyage home strenuous, Odysseus is skeptical of the Gods and always makes sure that they aren't lying to him before he goes forth on his mission to return home. In the beginning of the Fifth book, Zeus states that “on a lashed, makeshift raft and wrung with pains” that Odysseus shall make his journey back home with much discomfort and uncertainty. After Hermes delivers the message to Calypso, she says that she will provide for Odysseus and let him voyage home. Odysseus responds, “Passage home? Never. Surely you are plotting something else, gods, urging me .. to cross the ocean’s mighty gulfs.” Odysseus goes on to talk about how he is doubtful of what Calypso is conveying
