Odysseus Heroic Qualities

Many people throughout the world would think heroes are the people with special powers and unstoppable strength. But even though everyone has a different view on what an actually hero is, heroes are still one of the most common groups on Earth. A hero is a person showing noble qualities without the urge for fame and glory, but to support the ones that are struggling with a task. These individuals can perform very simple duties, or a deed that would appear to be infeasible. Some characteristics that are urgent to be a hero are astuteness, altruism, and fortitude. The first quality, astuteness, is a valuable trait that is present when Odysseus had to confront a monstrous cyclops. “And a welcome sight, indeed, to our dear friends were we, escapees from death, though they wept and sighed for the others we lost”, (Kline, Paragraph 23). They successfully escaped as Odysseus used the cyclops to his advantage by making the monster drunk using wine, and followed the action up by incinerating a spear to blind the cyclops. His actions revealed his astuteness because even under pressure by a death timer, he successfully used his surroundings to stall out time to brainstorm a plan. In the end, Odysseus was able to escape with most of his soldiers thanks to his …show more content…
In the real world, people with altruism aren’t fearful to take a risk to protect their own mankind. When a cat gets trapped in a tree or a house is on fire, you can get assistance from firefighters, who are fearless people risking their lives for the rest of humanity. Police officers have a dangerous task enforcing the laws and restraining those who don’t abide to the rules, which keeps the rest of society safe from criminals but also puts their life on the line if something were to backfire. All of these simple, but realistic heroes that are always sacrificing their life are showing selflessness to attempt to create a more peaceful
