Everyone has a different viewpoint of what heroism is and portrays. Many people think that heroism includes the capability of having strength and power and others think it includes intelligence and slyness. Now, Odysseus from the epic poem The Odyssey has shown various situations where he applied traits from either side of those perspectives. This comes to prove how Odysseus is able to exceed all expectations of most people, which proves that Odysseus is a true hero.
Most heroes have common characteristics; A characteristic that Odysseus shares with most heroes is determination. Odysseus proves his perseverance many times but one goal that Odysseus made clear to the readers is his want to go back to Ithaka to his family. Odysseus takes life-threatening

They believe that throughout the epic poem Odysseus develops a complex personality that takes away from heroic like features which eventually creates the thought that Odysseus is not a true hero. For example when he was stuck on the island with Kalypso he had many affairs with her. This is proven in Book V Line 163 when it states “ he lay with her each night”. This shows Odysseus as a disloyal person and since disloyalty isn’t part of a hero’s profile opposers think Odysseus is not a hero. However, Odysseus was forced to have affairs with Kalypso and although he did have the affairs he still longed to be home to his wife Penelope. This is proven in Book V Lines 212-214 and 224-229 when it states “Son of Laertes, versatile Odysseus, after these years with me, you still desire your old home?...My lady goddess, here is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope-- how well I know--- would seem a shade before your majesty death and old age being unknown to you while she must die. Yet, it is true, each day I long for home, long for the sight of home.” This portrays that when Odysseus had the chance. to leave he did which means he didn’t stay there by choice. Also Odysseus was trying to hint at the fact that he misses his wife without getting Kalypso angry which is why he strategically compliments her. Odysseus only had the affairs because he didn’t know how to get of the island but when

The author Mike Alsford once said, “The hero, it might be said, is called into being when the perception of need and the recognition of responsibility toward it are backed up by the will to act”. This excerpt identifies the driving force which spurred Odysseus into the legendary Greek hero that we know today. As it says, heroes aren’t born heroes , they become heroes from stepping up, carrying their personal chips on their shoulders, and upholding the responsibilities they are gifted with. Odysseus is an extraordinary example of this notion through each and every one of his actions.…

Odysseus has protected his family and the people who stand with him in the ways he knows best, so I believe that in the Odyssey by Homer that the main character Odysseus is a hero even though he had lost his men to the gods and monsters he came in contact with and had lied to his family he had to protect the people he loved from others that want to hurt him thought his loved ones. Odysseus is a hero in my view from the way that he tricks the Cyclops in to believing that his name is Nohbdy instead if Odysseus so when he and his men escape the Cyclops cannot tell who had been there. The reason Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy was that he knew that if someone would have asked the cyclops who had tricked him and they could be one that would not know that he was alive and might be one of his enemy’s. When he was planning a way to escape eight of his men were eaten by the cyclops from the long wait from the making of the plain but it was one of the sacrifices he had to make for a better out come from them…

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

As a hero you have to prove that you are there for people who don't you as well as they can, or just helping out people who helped you out in the past. Another reason as to why Odysseus is a hero, after sending three of his men to the island to investigate, they ate the lotus flower causing them to lose any desire to go back on their trip home to Ithaca. Odysseus went back and physically took them with him, after realising the truth about the Lotus-Eaters. He could’ve left them there and still have enough men to sail the ships, but he as a loyal king choose not to leave anyone behind, to go home.
