What is a hero? When someone hears the word “hero”, they think of a person in a leotard and cape with unnatural super powers flying through a city. The hero is looking to aid helpless citizens from an evil villain. In reality there are many other characteristics to being a hero. During The Odyssey by Homer,Odysseus went to go sail to fight in the Trojan war with his men. On his way back home to Ithaca he encounters many problems that he must face to get back home.Odysseus saved many lives besides his own because of his characteristics.He may not have physically looked like a hero, but his traits proved that he was one. Odysseus is a hero due to his strategic, clever and loyal traits.

Luckily he had brought beeswax and rope with them. “I carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them into my hands until they softened- no long task…” (706) He put the beeswax in his men’s ears so that it would block out the Siren’s tranceful song. He then had his men tie him to a wooden pole so that he could hear the music but so that they would not serenade to death, luckily they then passed the Sirens with no harm done. Another example is when Odysseus tricked the Cyclops. When Odysseus and his men met the Cyclops Odysseus told him that his name was “Nohbdy”. He then used his clever thinking and made a plan. He gave the Cyclops wine so that he would doze off to sleep. He then jabbed the Cyclops’s eye with a spear so that he would open the bolder door for them to escape. The Cyclops then cried out to his fellow Cyclops’s who lived near him yelling “Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me!” (693) This then made the Cyclops seem like a fool so the other’s ignored him.
