Is Odysseus Really A Hero? How could you call “The Great Odysseus” a hero? This man was hated by many gods, he cheated on his wife, he was cocky, and a murderer. Odysseus was hated by the gods; it was pretty clear to me when that they hated him because of the constant obstacles place in front of him. While leaving Calypso’s island, “his raft is destroyed in a storm and is thrown to the shores of the Phaeacians(P.51)”.…

When Odysseus realize that if he told Polyphemus the location of the ships he would want to destroy them, so, when the beast asked him for their location he answered “my ship? Poseidon lord, who sets the world a tremble, broke it up on the rocks at your lands end. A wind from the seaward served him, drove us there. We are survivors, these good men and I” (Homer 6).…

Second reason, after nine days they left Ismarus, they went to a land called Lotus Eater, and Odysseus got curious about the mainlanders and “sent out two picked men and a runner” (Homer 200), and because he was coward and sacrificed them instead of going by himself his crew mates ate the Lotus, “but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland” (Homer 205-210), and that is why Odysseus is at fault for the three of them who forgot their homeland and main purpose, which is another reason why he is not a hero. I think Odysseus is a hero because of these reasons, he is caring about people, he is trust worthy, and he can be protective. First, Odysseus can be caring about other people like his team mates during the time of need Odysseus can save his men’s life sometimes like during the time when he was planning of saving his comrades from the cyclops by stabbing it in the eye with a large sharpen log, just like in the military as the saying goes “no man left behind” or sometimes cops saving people’s lives or paramedics saving injured people. Second, Odysseus is very trust worthy, like all his men trust him mainly because he is a hero but overall, he really is a nice guy, he earned some of their trust by saving their lives or just being there for…

Odysseus was a hero due to his strength both physically and mentally throughout his journey. By “Which of them must endure with me to take up the great beam and spin it in the cyclops eye when sweet sleep had come over him” (Book 9 332-335) The quote shows us how Odysseus is strong mentally by how well thought out his plan is, and shows us his physical strength by taking the great beam with his men. Without both his mental and physical strength he and his men would have died in that cave. Furthermore in the ninth book it states “I spoke to all my companions words of courage so none shall be in panic and back out.”…
