Odysseus As An Epic Hero In Homer's The Odyssey

Homer's famous epic, The Odyssey, was an amazing story to many people depicting Odysseus’s quest home from the trojan war and what happens on that quest. The story has a lot of symbolism and lessons that are filtered through Odysseus’s journey home. Odysseus shows to be an epic hero because he was given a quest, helped by a helpful companion and enters a supernatural world. Odysseus was also depicted as not being a hero in some parts of the story as well.

Odysseus shows to be on a quest throughout the story. Odysseus is told to go and join the trojan war where his quest started, and it ended when he returned home to meet his son and see his wife after 20 years. Throughout his quest, Odysseus faces many challenges like having to go through too many monsters and facing many gods. Many times, through the book Odysseus I seen to be argent and sometimes jumps into action. Like in the book" Eurylochus tells Odysseus what has happened and begs him to sail away from Circe's island, against this advice, however, Odysseus rushes to save his men from the enchantress."(pg.1208) Odysseus doesn’t have a plan to save his men, he just thinks he can save him. Some may say that this was noble, but it was more egotistic and foolish. Odysseus also doesn’t have a good heart. He kills the maids that were forced to be with the suitors, also he didn’t care about his crew because he thought he was so skilled that he went up against Scylla and lost more men than he was said to have lost. Odysseus isn't an epic hero but an Anti-hero because he is a specialized hero from the help of the gods, the audience has sympathy, and he wins at the end of the story when his society was
