Throughout time, heroes have become notable for many things, although every hero is not flawless. Despite this fact, some epic heroes set a precedent for what your stereotypical hero would look like. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, our main protagonist, Odysseus, is developed and narrated to be an epic hero through his many feats from beginning to end of the epic poem. In his story, the hero of the Trojan War wishes to return home but is denied by Poseidon. Still determined, he departs on a journey encountering many obstacles such as monsters, gods, and storms. Tran 3 Odysseus is also revealed to have great leadership qualities and proves it through his journey. In one instance, Odysseus and his crew are rowing their ship in between two sea creatures, Charybdis and Scylla. Scylla is a multi-headed creature with a taste for flesh, Charybdis however is a gigantic whirlpool that will destroy any ship that crosses its path. Odysseus and his crew stay closer to Scylla to avoid losing as many men. Their plan works, but at the cost of some of their men. Discouraged and hopeless, Odysseus’s crew feels like giving up, but Odysseus does not allow that. ‘“Heads up, lads! We must obey the orders I give them. Get the oarshafts in your hands, and lay back hard on your benches; hit these breaking seas”’ (82-85). Odysseus communicates with his crew, reassuring them and leading them out of danger. For the duration of the epic, The Odyssey, it has been communicated how Odysseus has developed as an epic hero throughout his journey.
