The characteristics that identify a hero have developed over the years. What truly defines a heroic person? Something that needs daring, intelligence, overcoming obstacles, and plain cunning. In the Odyssey, Homer depicts Odysseus as a noble person. Odysseus faces various hurdles on his voyage home, which he overcomes with both his intellect and strength. In this episode, I will focus on the smallest details of Odysseus' character and the challenges of his heroism, compared with the concept of heroism portrayed in "The Most Dangerous Game" and the song "Holding Out for a Hero." Beeswax was the solution to not hearing the Sirens' voices. So Odysseus ordered his troops to plug their ears with beeswax. He also instructed them to tie their feet and hands to the ship. He didn't have any, simply in case something happened. He will be able to monitor his fellow men in some way. Later in the tale, Odysseus and his men had to confront Scylla. Odysseus kept his calm throughout so that the other guys didn't get too frightened. Despite having to confront Scylla in some way, with his quick thinking and difficult decision-making, he spared the rest of the troops. This is a difficult decision to make. Odysseus had to make decisions in a timely manner. Rainsford had to make similar judgments while developing strategies to win the hunt. Similarly, he used traps and his surroundings to gain an advantage. One of the traps he utilized was known as the Burmese Tiger Pit. This trap was intended for the general, yet he survived. In the song, the singer portrays a hero as being strong, fast, and fresh from a fight, which Odysseus has. Odysseus, for example, was stringing the bow, something that even the strongest of suitors could not manage. He thinks quickly about how to get out of a risky situation. Furthermore, he is fresh from the fights, having survived several fights and difficulties on his way home. Some would argue that Odysseus was not heroic because of his actions. When he escaped the Cyclops, he felt more confident. He ultimately told the Cyclops, "Cyclops, if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you and shamed you so, say Odysseus" (Homer 558-561). This was not a wise decision; he was also cursed by the sea god Poseidon. Some may argue that Odysseus' sacrifice of some of his soldiers during the confrontation with Scylla was harsh.
