The suitors did get what they deserved. They all wanted to marry Penelope and stayed at Odysseus’ house eating the livestock. Once Odysseus is home informs Penelope and she creates a contest that includes having the suitors string Odysseus’ bow. Whoever can do this task successfully will be the winner. “Morning, guys,” I said as I greeted the small group of tired teens in the living room. “Morning. Are you guys ready to head out?” My friend Ethan asked the group he led out of their rooms. It was probably safe to ask this question at this time of day.…
“Odysseus’ Journey” The epic poem we all know shows much detail of struggles that is being thrown at the ‘Teller of Tales’ Odysseus. “The Odyssey” by Homer shows that Odysseus goes through so many things to get back home to his wife Penelope on the land of Ithaca, but which part is most importantly impacted on the hero? A hero’s qualities are most defined by his journey and adventure, not the end of it. Through the book, beginning to end Odysseus mostly shows Loyalty, Intelligence and Leadership.…

Was Odysseus a Hero? Many know the great story of the mighty Odysseus. A man who was drafted to the Trojan War, and battled to find his way home for twenty years. He has been known throughout history as a legend, and heroic figure for centuries. Consequently, being known as such a famous person means leading a life under criticism.…
Similar to Odysseus’ treacherous journey home, my odyssey through middle school had its moments of success and defeat, happiness and frustration, and absolute uncertainty. From being adrift on my makeshift raft in a vast sea of sixth graders to my final days in middle school, I have obtained many new traits comparable to Odysseus’. As a new sixth grader, I was optimistic and hopeful of the years to come, analogous to Odysseus’ confidence that he would ultimately return to Ithaca. Through seemingly endless hours of studying, I gained the ability to make sacrifices and prioritize in order to succeed. Odysseus also demonstrated this skill when making decisions and sacrifices in acute situations to benefit as many people as possible.…
Love in the Time of Global Warming is a modern rendition of The Odyssey filled with good-natured characters, an intriguing plot line brimming with foreshadowing details, and innumerable references to the classic Greek myth of Odysseus. This novel was written by Francesca Lia Block. It is set in a post-apocalyptic version of California and Nevada, caused by the Earth-Shaker, which is what the characters of the story refer to as the earthquake that killed off many of their families and friends. The time before this devastation is what they call Then. The main character in this novel is called Pen.…
In the comedy epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a good leader because his arrogance causes his crew members to pass away and the lack of trust from his crew makes him unable to control them. Odysseus’s arrogance leads to the death of his crew. For example, while Odysseus and his crew are approaching Scylla, Odysseus knows that six of the crew members paddling will die. However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…
Many people know about Greek mythology and its epic stories about gods and heroes. A well-known character in one of the stories is Odysseus, the main character in the book “The Odyssey”. Many people debate if Odysseus is a hero or just a selfish king that only looks out for himself. The people that claim he is not a hero overlook many of his skills and heroic achievements. I believe Odysseus is a hero and will explain why.…
The journey back home for Odysseus and his men is rough due to consequences of their greedy actions. Odysseus and his men are still at sea because of his greedy action triggering Poseidon’s anger. As Odysseus escapes the cave after blinding the cyclop he tells him ”if any man on the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so-say Odysseus” (9.560). As a generous person Odysseus had the choice to leave after blinding the cyclop. But instead only thought about his honor and glory of blinding the cyclop.…
In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels a long journey back to his home, Ithaca, after fighting in the Trojan War for 10 long years. However, I strongly believe Odysseus himself was the reason that he witnessed a long journey returning to his homeland. If he hadn’t made specific decisions, I’d expect that Odysseus would be able to return earlier. In the epic, I believe that three major decisions could’ve helped Odysseus sail back towards home sooner if he had chosen the right choice. One of the significant decisions is Odysseus’ accord to rest on the Cyclops’ island and approach the Cyclops’ cave.…
The household in Homer’s The Odyssey can be considered the basis of Ancient Greek society, as all societal recognition and conventions stem from this unit. Any actions committed that attempt to ruin the integrity and tradition of one’s household are therefore considered severe crimes that must be wholly resolved by equally severe vengeance. Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus recognize the deep importance of their family household, and possess the persistent need to maintain its integrity and tradition. The gods advise these mortals in their shared struggle, even consistently intervening in their conflict to ensure that the restoration of their household is achieved, suggesting that both gods and men serve a societal order that must be preserved…
Unfortunately, to reach their home, they were forced to sail directly between these two dangerous hazards. Odysseus was left with a huge dilemma. Should he sail closer to Scylla or Charybdis? He chose to go closer to Scylla, and this showed how he could make major decisions under great pressure anticipating a succesful out come. If they had gone near Charybdis, all of them would have most likely drowned.…
