Odysseus: A True Hero

Odysseus was viewed as many things; a hero to the greeks, a vile beast to the romans, and a husband and father to his dear family. No matter who he was feared, loved, or hated by; all recognized Odysseus as a leader. As a king, Odysseus lead his men to battle against the Trojans and emerged a hero of this great war. It was thanks to his personality traits and characteristics that he was able to bravely lead his forces and overpower the Trojans. Although, these same characteristics that brought him up as a hero brought danger and discomfort upon Odysseus and death upon his men. As any leader should, Odysseus showed confidence; not only in himself, but in his team as well. He trusted his men enough to have them tie him to the ship and even gave permission to disobey orders once he became attracted to the musical notes of the sirens. He used his confidence to boost his team into the right direction when doubt was in the air; but, too much of anything can be a bad thing. After toppling the Trojans in the war, Odysseus is filled with an almost ridiculous pride and …show more content…
Probably not. His confidence and curiosity was the cause of death for men in the cave of Polyphemus and Poseidon’s wrath. He was not honest with his crew, as a leader should be. With Ithica in sight, and Odysseus napping, the crew members through Odysseus was keeping loot and treasures for himself so they opened a bag that had magical winds which set them many steps back from the finish of the long journey home. Not only this, but he decided to keep the fact that much of the crew had their final moments upon them as they approached Scylla. He pulled his crew out of many rough situations, such as an incident where the crew was intoxicated due to special lotus flowers, but he was also the reason they were pulled into most of those situations in the first
