Ashure Ashe says that, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge surpass all other at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost” (1).Heroes today are not people who can defeat cyclops, or survive three headed monsters, or try to fight off giants like the protagonist of the Odyssey, Odysseus. Heroes today are people do good deeds not for their own personal gain, but for the good of others. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus and adventures his to different places, his many battles, and his many choices and the Greeks see him as a great hero. But the reasons why he fought many battles, went to the different places and made the choices he made, makes him by today’s definition of a hero, not a hero. …show more content…
Which is typically who the hero of a story is. But his motives and what he does after his heroic deeds makes it seems like he’s not the hero he’s hyped up to be. My first piece of evidence is after defeating the cyclops he boasted and mocked the cyclops revealing his true name and gets him and all of his crew cursed. This shows his arrogance and selfishness by getting his whole crew in more danger. In the text, it says “Puny, am I, in a Caveman’s hands? How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guest under your roof”. Pg 668 “if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye…..” Pg 669 “O hear me, lord, blue girdiler of the islands, if I am thine indeed, and thou art father: grant that Odysseus, raider of cities never see his home…” Pg

Even veterans were around in Ancient Greece. Even Odysseus was a veteran he fought in the trojan war 3000 years ago, and in other times fighting to get back home to his family. A perfect example of a veteran is odysseus from the Odyssey. He travels all around greece on his way from the trojan war.…

A hero is a mythological or legendary figure of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability. The main characteristics of a hero is to help people for other people’s benefit, to be honorable, honest or trustworthy, moral, and to do things for the greater good. Odysseus has protected his family and the people who stand with him in the ways he knows best, so I believe that in the Odyssey by Homer that the main character Odysseus is a hero even though he had lost his men to the gods and monsters he came in contact with and had lied to his family he had to protect the people he loved from others that want to hurt him thought his loved ones. Odysseus is a hero in my view from the way that he tricks the Cyclops in to believing that his name is Nohbdy instead if Odysseus so when he and his men escape the Cyclops cannot tell who had been there. The reason Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy was that he knew that if someone would have asked the cyclops who had tricked him and they could be one that would not know that he was alive and might be one of his enemy’s. When he was planning a way to escape eight of his men were eaten by the cyclops from the long wait from the making of the plain but it was one of the sacrifices he had to make for a better out come from them…

Anyone who is successful in completing a gallant and courageous act, can be considered a hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is an admirable hero because he uses strategy instead of strength to overcome several obstacles. Homer presents this in Odysseus’s use of deception, the route he chooses to get home, his choice of words and his use of disguises. To overcome a hurdle one may wish for a great deal of strength. Yet when Odysseus came in contact with a giant Cyclops, he never questioned nor focused on his lack of vitality.…

(Book 9, 1222, 416-419).Odysseus and what is left of his men have already been trapped on the Cyclops’s island and when they finally get their chance to escape the cyclops, Odysseus puts all of them in danger. The cyclops could have very easily hit the ship they were fleeing away in with a bolder and killed all of them right then. Although the cyclops missed, it was all Odysseus’s fault that they were put in that life threatening situation, just because he felt the need to brag about himself and not look out for others. In the end, a hero is someone who will always look out for those who are helpless and Odysseus is just too conceited to be…

Odysseus, the main character in the epic poem, appears to be the hero slaying the monsters, but as his journey continues it becomes more difficult to distinguish who the monster really is.
