At the very beginning it is questionable whether he is a hero or not but as you read through understand Odysseus is definitely a hero because he fits the traits accordingly as any other. Batman for instance is a hero to
ALMOST everyone. He fights bad guys and even innocent civilians. So Odysseus shouldn't be exempt from that title even if he did bad things like blind Polyphemus, kill Telemachus and suitors. But he did save the Greeks in the Trojan War and it was his idea to make the Trojan Horse. He remained loyal to his wife Penelope and never gave up on returning to Ithaca.
