Odysseus A Hero Analysis

Improved Essays
Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, is not what people would consider a hero. He lies, cheats, steals, and murders. There is no doubt that most men had to endure what Odysseus but the big question is, did he do any of the things he did with decency or honor. Heroes are supposed to be a good person overall. Meaning that heroes do everything with decency and honor. So does it mean that Odysseus is a villain? No he is not but he is not a hero as well.
Odysseus has no respect for anyone, he only has respect for himself. He values himself over anything else, especially his own crew. They were willing to fight and die for him but he had the nerve to call them “mutinous fools”. He called them this because they ate some cow from Helios’ land after going through everything they had gone through. When he knew that his crew was going to die for it, he didn’t do anything about it. He could have easily paid homage to the gods to try to get forgiveness

Yes, that can be said and that is true but that was the only time he had respect for them and tried to help them. He basically killed his crew and never tried to help them as much as he could. The other argument that can be made is “He was out at sea for twenty years and saw all these beautiful woman, all men would more than likely do the same if they were in his situation”. Wrong, men who loved his family would wait; his wife waited, why couldn’t he? Penelope could have easily run to a new man that is a king of a different island but she waited for him, he screwed her over by cheating on her.
Odysseus will a hero, he is basically a reverse version of Robin Hood. He killed his men, had no respect for anyone, and he couldn’t stay true to anyone. None of those are hero qualities. Those are non-hero qualities. Odysseus will never be a hero; he will always be a

He struggled with his arrogance, vanity, lied to his own men, made costly mistakes, and in the end lost all of his men. He cared more for himself than his men, making him an anti-hero. Therefore Odysseus should not be considered an archetype hero. Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus seems like the hero that everyone looks up too, but upon deeper thought he made more mistakes then heroism acts. After stabbing Polyphemus in…

His crew is dead mostly due to his folly. His pride led to his long estrangement from home more than bad weather did. He was unfaithful to his wife, and he massacred the best of the young men in Ithaka. Odysseus was not the god-like man people claim him to be, and that’s okay. These flaws in his character show him to be more human and they make him more relatable to the reader.…

He was ugly and society shunned him without getting to know him. The creation became angry after Victor travelled around the country to find him and murder him, but it is ironic that Victor is angry that his creation has committed murders, “My rage is unspeakable, when I reflect that the murderer, whom I have turned loose upon society, still exists.” (Shelley 148). If Victor was human, he wouldn’t want to kill his own creation, just like a parent should never murder their own child. Victor was upset that his creation became a murderer, but he never taught his creation to adapt to human society and cope with his looks. If Victors fulfillment would be to kill his own creation before he dies then he is far from humane, “I must pursue and destroy the being whom I gave existence; then my lot on earth will be fulfilled and I may die.” (Shelley 158).…

To start, yet again Odysseus’ pride is shown when his men butcher and feast the cattle of the sun god and the latter seeks out to get his revenge. His pride is revealed through his past circumstances, if he didn’t make the prior flaws of his sin of pride he wouldn’t be put in a predicament where his ship is destroyed and the rest of his men are killed. Sorkin wrote A Few Good Men to try to communicate one major theme: what makes a person good or bad, hero or villain, altruistic or egoistic is all very subjective and depends on whoever is judging the person, and their personal life experiences and biases. This message shows up in almost every character, from the obvious protagonist Kaffee to the lesser side characters Ross and Kendrick. No one thinks they are the villain, and “villainous” people almost always think what they are doing is morally and logically correct. Kaffee is the first character we see this theme in, from the beginning of the play he is care-free and irresponsible. These may be minor hiccups in anyone else’s character, but as a Navy attorney this is unacceptable.…
