Odysseus: A Good Leader

Odysseus is not a good leader in Book 9. The greatest weakness for any leader is hubris, something Odysseus has too much of hubris (pride). Odysseus does not make smart decisions. Odysseus is a bad leader and he should be criticized as a leader. He has too much of hubris that's why Odysseus blames his men for tragic events, and an example from book 9 is “ Then I urged to cut and run, set sail, but would the listen? Not those mutinous fools; there were too much wine to swill, too many sheep to slaughter down along the beach, and shambling longhorn cattle”. This is the part of the book after Odysseus and his men sack the city of the Cicones and they stayed and feasted on the loot they had gotten from the city. Then the surviving Cicones …show more content…
He gave all the information about him to the giant when he was acting the ship by rocks. “So they begged but they could not bring my fighting spirit round. I called back with another burst of anger, ‘Cyclops if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so -- say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye, Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca!” This shows that he has too much pride in him and he thinks he is too smart but right here he made a really stupid move he told the cyclops everything about him like his really name, his father's name and where he is from. He was unaware that cyclops is Poseidon’s son. His men tried to stop him but he didn’t listen to them and continued because he has too much hubris in him and his big ego. He didn’t think about how it is going to affect him and his men. Because of his this action he got punished and didn’t get home on time and all of his men die living him alone to suffer by himself. In conclusion Odysseus usually blames his crew for his mistakes. Also Odysseus can be a good leader sometimes but he lets his ego get in the way most of the time. Odysseus needs to think about the consequences of his actions, not only the effects on him the effect on his crew his crew, who he seems to overlook most of the

Wild with arrogance and a desire for recognition, Odysseus becomes uncontrollable. Exclamation points, following each of Odysseus’ jeers, illustrate the great extent of his unruliness. “They begged,” recalls Odysseus, describing how his men implored him to stop provoking the cyclops. The use of the word begged reinforces the existence of Odysseus’ monomania. Not even his pleading men could stop Odysseus from seeking his own glory.…

However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…

The fact that he did not react to their screeches proves that he has selfish characteristics unlike a reliable hero, who would help his “friends” when in danger. Although one could argue that he did not attempt to rescue them because they were already “below” the water, “they were screaming and reaching out their hands to [him] in this horrid encounter” (XII, 256-7). In other words, Odysseus chooses not to rescue his comrades because he does not care about other people who risk their lives for him; he disregards Circe’s advice and goes forth with his own agenda; he lies about the true dangers of his own expedition; he also watches his own “friends” drown while having prior knowledge this would happen, but he continues…
