Paganism is an enormous religion. Like Christianity, it has many subsets within itself. This specific subset of Paganisms is the Norse Pagans. These Pagans focus themselves on Odinism. They call themselves the followers of Astru. This religion is an original, indigenous form of heathen religion. The word heathen and pagan are interchangeable, and synonymous. Odinism is a life affirming religion. They value everything that sustains, promotes, enriches and enhances life. The end of life to Pagans is seen as a positive, good, and hallowed. Odinists rejoice and celebrate everything around them such as the changing of the seasons, or the comforts of family. Unlike the Jewish religion, they believe in feasting in the worship of the gods.
How they believe the world became itself is found in a poem called Voluspa. They believe between Muspelheim which is the land of fire and Nifheim which is the land of ice had an empty space called Ginnungigap. Following the Exodus from Egypt the Israelites wandered the Sinai wilderness for forty years. Not sure of their future they began worshipping the Canaanite Pantheon instead of God and only upon threats from Moses did they stop their worshipping the pagan deities. Substantial amount of evidence from various archaeological excavations throughout the Levant confirm that the Israelites and the Canaanites believed in the same Father-God named El. The Kingdom of Israel, ruled by Jeroboam I, began a religiously divided nation with idols of El's such as the golden calf in the temples located in Dan and at Bethel and said "Here are your gods O Israel.…

This paper will cover the Vikings’ religion, from being thought of as Pagans, to converting to Christianity, it will also include their deities and other beliefs. The Vikings, also referred to as the Norse, were thought of being Pagans because of their traditions but they then slowly converted to Christianity after being introduced to it. Even though they were thought of as either Pagans or Christians, they still had their own gods and goddesses and mythology, which is what makes Viking religion really riveting. They have a somewhat complicated and misunderstood religion, although, like most religions, it just changed over time. Believe it or not, it is exceptionally difficult to write a page on “basic beliefs” for pagans. The main reason is because there are such a wide variety of individual beliefs in paganism, and so many different paths, that it is difficult to write a page on specific beliefs. However there are a few certain universal pagan beliefs that I will attempt to cover on this page. As far as diety is concerned, most pagans believe in A Goddess, and a God. Instead of the Christian belief where there is only ONE supreme being and that he is male, pagans choose to believe that everything in nature has a duality…a male and female side, and therefore so should Spirit.…

Humans have a powerful need to belong to community, a need which is frequently stymied in a society as highly mobile and individualistic as America. Rebeckah Shepherd gave voice to this longing when describing her sense of loss after moving to a new region The intense perception that they are stigmatized by mainstream American culture causes intense feelings of alienation in pagans, and often requires specialized counseling to enable them to cope (Moe, J. L., Cates, K., & Sepulveda, V., 2013). One of the ways individuals handle this anxiety and develop a sense of community, that they are a part of something bigger than themselves which helps them bring meaning to their lives, is to create and embrace a type of symbolic ethnicity (Charbonneau,…

The most obvious connection between these gods is their collective connections to the afterlife and the underworld. Both Hermes and Odin are seen as envoys to the dead and Odin specifically was commonly honored through sacrifices of powerful figures. Odin and Loki’s offspring also run some of the afterlives just as Hades runs the entirety of the Greek afterlife. As king of the gods, Odin is popularly depicted as a wise and serene figure analogous to Zeus, but Odin is actually a seemingly flippant and tricky character more analogous to Loki. Odin, instead of ruling through honor and bravery, seems to rule by peaceful use of his cunning and his dominance over magic.…
