Odierno On Women In Combat

Women in Combat
Odierno states, “If you can meet the standards we’ve established, then you should be able to perform in that position, and that’s where we are headed.” In other words, Odierno asserts that even though you are a woman and want to go into combat forces, if you can meet the standards that have been established you are more than likely able to get into the combat position you’d like. Despite the fact that women should stay at home and fulfill their family needs, women have the right to choose whether or not to be in military forces because standards can be met and gender is nothing but an immutable characteristic.
Women are the caretakers, the nurturers, and the one’s that make a house a home. It has been that way for centuries.

As a modern, growing country America has supposedly overcome ideas such as strict traditional gender roles. Author Tarak Barkawi confronts this issue as he argues we have missed an area in our United States military. His article published in 2012 titled, “Equality in Army and Society”, harshly challenges the rules and regulations in the U.S army against women’s rights. Barkawi’s main point is, women do not have the same career opportunities due to traditional roles, masculinity in the military, and civilian ideas of gender roles. Barkawi states, “the army is one of the last redoubts of traditional masculinity”.…

The women who argue to be able to serve in combat are not acknowledging the danger it puts themselves and the United States Military in. In the article,“Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S Infantry.”, Serrano expresses that if they allowed women to serve in combat during her service in the military, anyone including herself would have jumped at the opportunity because of the novelty, excitement, and challenge; but, her views have changed with the experience and knowledge she has gained. Everyone needs to accept the fact that women are different, not only physically, but all around. It will only destroy the mission of the services (Para. 1). Also, allowing women to serve in infantry will cause enormous amounts of distractions.…

When it comes to war, there seems to be the same subject that always comes up. The women’s role and where do they belong. Men have traditionally always been the ones who fought in the wars while the women were excluded. Being seen as the weaker sex would make war tougher for the men to fight, since they would have to look out for the women who are weaker by nature. While some women may be as tough as men there are still factors that can be distracting.…

“ Women are qualified for war. They would just have to work that much harder to be able to meet that goal. They would have to carry 100 pounds on their backs and would have to be able to go across the landscape with all this gair and are known to most likely not make it.
