Improved Essays
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between an octopus and a squid? While they are similar in many ways, they are also different in others. I will talk about both the similarities and the differences between their physical characteristics, their habitat, and their behavior. The octopus and the squid are both similar and different in the way they look. They’re closely related to mollusks. Squids have a backbone-like structure that is flexible which is similar to the shell of a snail. The octopus doesn’t have a shell nor a stiff structure and have soft bodies. Both belong to the cephalopod group and have blue blood, are head-footed animals with 8 arms, and possess both a mantle and a head. Squids have 2 tentacles arranged in pairs

The Pacific Northwest tree octopus (Octopus paxarbolis) can be found in the temperate rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America. Their habitat lies on the Eastern side of the Olympic mountain range, adjacent to Hood Canal. These solitary cephalopods reach an average size (measured from arm-tip to mantle-tip,) of 30-33 cm. Unlike most other cephalopods, tree octopuses are amphibious, spending only their early life and the period of their mating season in their ancestral aquatic environment. Because of the moistness of the rainforests and specialized skin adaptations, they are able to keep from becoming desiccated for prolonged periods of time, but given the chance they would prefer resting in pooled water.…

The most confused species of porpoise and dolphin are the Harbour Porpoise and the Bottlenose Dolphin found in Britain’s seas. Once again we have echinoderms. Echinoderms are absolutely exclusive to the ocean and have no fresh-water or terrestrial based representatives. As for a possible reason why they are exclusive to marine habitats I would theorize that simply nothing of their relatives ever adapted towards land. Based on the theory that all life probably began deep within the ocean, even what life is now on land has ancient origins from the ocean. Though despite this there are still exclusive marine species because it seemed these life forms just never left the ocean.…

Land has trees, grass, plants, and now buildings and air. Whereas, the ocean/sea has water, seaweed, kelp, sand, and the sea floor. We call what we walk on, the ground, but what's at the bottom of the ocean, we call the sea floor. Both of these places have plants and different animals that inhabit them, for instance, on land, we have the dog as our companion, but in the ocean, seals are the dogs of the sea. Dolphins are the mermaids companion, they hunt together, just as we do with our dogs.…
