The first and foremost characteristic, Norris introduces in this novel is Presley’s individualism. As a true American, Presley wants to write a unique and a perfect literature work in the form of poems such as Song of the West and continue looking for writing a superlative literature and a poem book. He seems persistent in writing the poem for and of the new race, people, spirits, and which encompasses the general people and provinces. But, due to loads of harsh and tragic encounters, he shows and feels in his region, he abandons his dream of writing the Song of the West. But, these circumstances do not able to discourage and upset him to write a poem book.
