Rome created mankind’s first republican government that was ran by elected officials. It all started with the overthrowing of a monarch king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, and in 509 BC it had a constitution that was similar to the United States Constitution. They had the highest ranking in the Roman Republic and were most often patricians. The consuls both had many important duties to the Roman Republic such as managing the government by supervising the work of government officials, acting as a judge between the Assembly and Senate, and being the commander of the army. The power of the veto was also introduced to the consuls; it was a form of checks and balances between the branches. In a state of emergency, the consuls had the duty to decide who will be the dictator.

He ruled for forty years until his death in 14 AD. To ease the mind of the Senate and avoid being killed like many dictators before him, Octavian would adopt the name Princep (first citizen). He was later given the religious title, Augustus (“the illustrious one”) in 27 BC by the Senate. During his rule, he started a Foriegn Affairs Program that handled foreign affairs, money, crime, and fires. He also started the first police force and fire department to regulate crime and fires. Augustus also created a stockpile of food, water, and other supplies for the poor people of Rome. In addition to his other achievements, establishing the Pax Romana was Augustus’s greatest
