I exposed myself to new ideas and obstacles when I became an ocean lifeguard. Surprisingly, the hardest part about being a lifeguard is communicating with people from different cultures and backgrounds. For example, one beach has a large population of Spanish speaking immigrants. To communicate with them was a hefty setback for someone like myself who does not come from a Spanish speaking background. To adapt, I asked as many Spanish speakers as possible, how to say certain phrases until I was able to communicate with basic sentences to get my point across. Another problem I faced was knowing the area. Studying maps of the area and going to local restaurants was necessary to be able give directions and recommend restaurants when confronted
