While observing Occupational Therapy Assistant Fatima deCouto-Garcia, (a BCC program OTA graduate), at The New Bedford Rehab Hospital, we were tasked with focusing on recognizing the performance skill deficits and contextual factors that brought a client to seek Occupational Therapy services. The facility we visited is considered an acute long term rehabilitation hospital and the patients we observed each had complex multi-facetted symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols. For the purpose of this reflection we will focus on one patient, a 45 year old woman, Jane Doe, who 6 weeks prior had her left leg amputated above the knee. Jane was described as a homeless, diabetic, suffering from depression. The high level of Jane’s daily methadone dosage was preventing her acceptance to a skilled nursing…

From midterm to current my CI allowed me to handle more of her caseload, observe online documentation, and weekly progress reports on her patients. She encouraged questions, and thoroughly explained why certain treatments and activities were better than others. She allowed for open communication of patient interventions, which made me feel comfortable enough to take on more of her case load and contributed to my visual, and hands on style of learning. From my initial visit to current my CI has ensured my environment promotes growth at my clinical site.…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

Over the past semester I have learned a great deal from the clinical experiences I have encountered at East Pavilion and on the Sentara Norfolk General Rehabilitation floor. Through these humbling experiences, I have gained a new appreciation for the ability to perform simple day to day tasks such as bathing, dressing, and even walking on my own. These tasks I often take for granted and forget that what I consider a simple task may be a difficult or painful chore for others. As I reflect on my experiences, I have identified some similarities and differences in the experiences at both facilities.…

I performed the history on the patient as the physical was performing an ultrasound on the patient and doing other various exercises. This gave me a limited amount of time with the patient. It took me approximately 20 minutes to complete the history. I felt like this time limit helped me to ask the right questions in a more efficient, but focused manner. If I didn't have a time limit I felt like the patient history would have extended too long, resulting in less time the physical therapist had with the patient.…

Since my first few weeks of outpatient therapy, I’ve heard that my diagnosis does not define me, that I am more than my diagnosis. While I understand that to a degree, I know that what I deal with is a large part of my current identity along with who I am as a person. My identity strongly revolves around it and I cannot pretend that it does not shape my life. In 8th grade I was put into an outpatient program at a local hospital for having suicidal thoughts.…

Reflecting on the materials covered thus far in this course, I have learned and gained tremendous insight of the field of counseling psychology. One of my favorite aspects of the course was learning about the history of counseling psychology, specifically the difference between counseling and clinical psychology. Prior to the course, I was not very cognizant of the difference between the two fields. I assumed the main difference between counseling and clinical psychology was clinical psychology focuses more on diagnosing and treating patients with mental illness and disorders.…
