Occupational Therapy Observation Report

Jacel Romero, Michelle Kim, and I chose to table at the Student Union on North Campus to educate the general public about occupational therapy. We wanted people to learn some basic information about what occupational therapy is and what occupational therapists do. We set up a table on 4/11/2017 with a poster we created containing common questions that individuals might have regarding occupational therapy. We also created a flier containing all the questions we wrote on the poster with answers to give to people. In addition, we had computers on the table playing videos of occupational therapists working in various settings. Initially, we planned to sell donuts and donate the money to a charity. We wanted students at UB to learn more about the profession and how it is important in the healthcare field. In addition, we wanted to teach people how occupational therapy can impact everyone throughout the lifespan. Although, we only tabled for a day, I think we managed to leave an impact on those we interacted with. We explained to the students what occupational therapy is and how it is different from physical therapy, where occupational therapists work, and how occupational therapy can impact someone’s life. One strength of the project was the location we set up our table at. Student Union has a high volume of students in various different majors, thus we were able to spread information about occupational therapy to people that were not in a health-related major. In addition, most undergraduate courses are located on North Campus. Hence, advocating on North Campus can introduce students to a professional graduate program that they can possibly enroll in.
