Occupational Therapy for Pediatrics
Occasionally, life takes us through unexpected paths. When my son was a three years old, I began to notice that his development did not correspond to his age. My son could not trace straight lines in any direction; he also had difficulties with drawing and holding a crayon. At the beginning, I thought it was normal, but still, as a mother, I started paying more attention, and soon I realized that it was not normal, and I began to worry. I came to the decision to take him to a specialist for evaluation. We went to Early Steps, which is a program to treat children with developmental delays and provide early intervention for further evaluations. OT intervention has been shown to have a positive effect on student’s confidence in their writing skills (Case-Smith, 200, as cited by Jackman & Stagnitti, 2007). Therefore, the OT practitioners support patients or clients to be able to fulfill their activities of daily living (Clifford O`Brien & Hussey 2012). Occupation therapy can be provided to different age groups, for example, from newborn to older generation, OTs work with the patient in different settings, such as home, clinics, daycares, nursing homes, rehabilitation center, hospital, work places, or any place that would help the patient to overcome their difficulties (Early, 2012).
I know that I made the right decision when I decided to join the program. The experience that I had with my son was what drove me to discover what I really want to do, which is to help and give hope. I wish to give other parents the same experience that I had when my son came from therapist and I saw that for the first time ever he could write his name and last name on his own. I was so proud of him and I was extremely happy. I want to be the person who helps these children and parents experience their full potential and joy. I know that as an OT I can make a difference in people’s
