He was discharged from the services at age two and a half due to his progress. Although Dominic’s vocabulary increased, his mother noted that his intelligibility was poor.
Dominic attended preschool at Kiddie Academy. In February 2010 he was referred to The Pauline K. Winkler Speech-Language-Hearing Center for a multidisciplinary evaluation due to articulation and speech intelligibility concerns. His occupational therapy services were decreased to once per week for 30 minutes, with occupational therapy consultation once per month for 15 minutes. Dominic was diagnosed with Developmental Coordination Disorder. That same school year, Dominic was administered an occupational therapy evaluation. Results from the assessment (BOT-2) revealed motor coordination and visual motor integration abilities within the average range. Dominic’s occupational therapist reported that he demonstrated significant progress with strength and endurance for fine motor activities. Moreover, it was reported that Dominic was better able to grasp writing/coloring utensils with an efficient grasp and maintain an upright sitting posture when seated on a rug for carpet time and in his chair for tabletop activities. Dominic demonstrated age-appropriate fine and visual motor skills in a one to one setting, however he was not always able to transfer those skills over to the classroom. Dominic’s occupational therapist stated that he needed to continue to improve his letter formations skills for handwriting legibility. Consequently, Dominic began receiving individual and small group occupational therapy services. As a kindergarten student, Dominic attained many age-appropriate skills, however he had difficulty reading back his own writing, writing numbers 11-20, and drawing/coloring within

I have wanted to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant since I was in 7th grade. The school I went to housed all of the special needs children for the county. I grew up with these children in my classes and always wanted them to know that just because they have the label special needs does not mean that they are different from anybody else. I watched an OTA come to school everyday and work with these children to help them write better and kick a ball so they could go to P.E. with us. I thought to myself what an amazing job opportunity this would be to let people know that they can do anything they set their mind to.…

While observing Occupational Therapy Assistant Fatima deCouto-Garcia, (a BCC program OTA graduate), at The New Bedford Rehab Hospital, we were tasked with focusing on recognizing the performance skill deficits and contextual factors that brought a client to seek Occupational Therapy services. The facility we visited is considered an acute long term rehabilitation hospital and the patients we observed each had complex multi-facetted symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols. For the purpose of this reflection we will focus on one patient, a 45 year old woman, Jane Doe, who 6 weeks prior had her left leg amputated above the knee. Jane was described as a homeless, diabetic, suffering from depression. The high level of Jane’s daily methadone dosage was preventing her acceptance to a skilled nursing…

As mentioned by Lynch in his article Onset of speech-like vocalizations in Infants with Down Syndrome, children with Down Syndrome do not acquire canonical babbling and produce words at the same time as children with traditional linguistic development (1995). As mentioned earlier, Jules’ parents taught their son simple sign language to communicate words useful on a daily basis in the child environment. As observed in the video, when Louis simply stated the words which referred to the object presented to him, Jules found different ways to communicate what he saw…
