Occupational health nurses are frequently first responders when injuries occur at manufacturing companies. Occupational nurses have the responsibility of meeting agency needs and employee needs. In 2012, the AAOHN identified 10 roles for occupational nurses. Occupational nurses have unique roles in caring for employees in primary, secondary and tertiary situations. Primary prevention for the occupational nurse involves health promotion and injury prevention. Examples include: employee health screenings, immunizations, education on health hazards during work and after work hours as well as the use of protective gear when operating machinery.
