Occupational Configuration Assignment

When I was in the process of completing the occupational configuration assignment, I learned a lot more about myself than I thought I knew. I decided to break my findings up in eight categories including: Sleep/Rest, ADL’s. IADL’s, Work, Play, Leisure, Education, and Social Participation. I learned that the balance in my life is not perfect. To my surprise I spend about 44.6% of my week sleeping. I honestly had no idea that I slept that much. My education took up 20% of my week which is good, but I can probably work to decrease sleep and add more education. My leisure and ADL’s seemed pretty normal to me because they were ar 13.4% and 15.8%. My social participation also shocked me in a way because it was only at 5% and I would have thought that it would have been a lot higher than that. Unfortunetly, my work came out to only be 1% because I have a summer job, so in the fall I volunteer coaching cheerleading only once a week. My play and IADL’s were so low, both at 0.06%, that I was not even able to include them on my chart. …show more content…
I may sleep a lot, but so far it has not had an effect on my grades. The 20% of time I spend on my education has been beneficial to me because I have been able to keep my grades up. I chose to only have 15 of my time dedicated to work because of my summer job. I have a very good paying job in the summer, so I like to take the off months to focus on school and volunteer if I am able to. When it comes to my time use, my parents have the biggest impact. Being that I still live at home, they are still very consistent with checking on my educational status. This gives me motivation to try to spend as much time as I can on my school work. My parents also work a lot so when I am home alone, I enjoy to

Even though some say that with the extra time to sleep students won’t be studying as much, many studies show just the opposite. Information shows that test scores significantly rise when students get the correct amount of sleep. O’Neill says, “One 2012 study found that middle schoolers’ test scores rose in reading and math,” (O’Neill 20). From this quote, it is definite that when school starts later, school performance improves. Additionally, some more research shows that when school began at 8:35, grades in almost all subjects rose.…

In “Our Kids need more sleep”, by Valerie Erde, it is explained that children need more sleep to do well in school. It has a couple of studies that say that children with more sleep do better in school, and are more alert in general. I completely agree with the author. I feel that if middle to high school students were allowed more time to sleep, it would improve most aspects of their life during school days. I know for sure that on the weekends, when I sleep in, I am in an all around better mood, and I am alert and ready for the day.…

In order to persuade readers that school times need to be changed, Aaron Carroll uses his own personal experiences as well as hard facts to build a compelling case for the change. Carroll begins his argument by relating directly to the reader using his own personal experiences on the subject, and then relates numbers that show that the change is not only economically viable, but even preferred because of the amount of money it will introduce to the economy. Carroll uses the all encompassing economy and the common ground provided by sleep to direct his argument to the general public in a way that gives them a vested interest in the relatively arbitrary subject of high school start times. In his article “The Economic Case for Letting Teenagers…

Today, only 31% of students are receiving the recommended eight hours sleep each night (Wheaton). This causes a problem called sleep deprivation, which can lead to a decrease in academic performance and overall physical health. Lack of sleep poses a big problem to public schools due to the fact that most students report being lethargic during the school day. This has caught the eye of school board members and teachers alike, which leads to the question: To what extent should the school day be modified to accommodate a teenager’s natural sleep pattern? While advocacy groups would say that schools should incorporate a later start time to increase academic performance, schools, in turn, would have to pay millions of dollars to shift or extend…
