In the book “3:59” the author Gretchen McNeil, writes the story about a girl named Josie, whose life is miserable and would do anything so switch it with a doppelgänger who she thinks her life is perfect, and everything she wants but has an unexpected twist in her life. A quote from the book is, “But Jo’s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo’s boyfriend, he hates her. Jo’s mom is missing, and is probably insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.”…

In Between Shades of Gray, pages three to sixty-six, Lina Vilkas and her family are arrested and taken away from their home on June 14, 1941. When the NKVD arrives on their doorstep, the family immediately begins packing their most useful possessions and destroying the rest of their belongings. Afterwards, they are loaded onto a cramped train car, where they meet Andrius Arvydas, a seventeen year old from Sanciai, who cannot find his father, just like Lina. In these few chapters, a literary element was frequently used, flashbacks. This section has seven flashbacks, which is a considerable amount.…

Matthew Myers English 10 Honors Pre-AP Vidal September 2, 2016 How to Read Literature like A Professor Chapter Response Introduction Recognizing patterns can make reading easier by helping the reader to comprehend the more complicated parts of a book so the reader can get a deeper sense of what the book is trying to portray. By recognizing patterns in books it allows the reader to recall information from past experiences or texts to help them figure out what the book is trying to get you to understand. By recognizing the symbols and patterns of animal farm it allowed me to understand the deeper meaning of the book allowing the read to not be confusing, but fun and exciting.…
I find that this book, especially the last chapter, taught me not to take things at face value. I believe that I will be more cautious as to form an opinion based on just what the outer appearance is. In addition, it taught me that life is a copulation of events that continue to form and shape us to deal with challenges in the future. Each of these seamless events creates a stronger ability to deal with both the good and the bad adventures we…
Project essay 2 Mortimer Adler's work of "How to Read a Book" brings up many interesting viewpoints and idea's on effective reading strategies. The differences between sitting down as a kindergartner reading a Dr. Seuss, and a collegiate scholar finding evidence on a claim he must either prove or disprove is an entirely different game to say the least. The differences, according to Adler, are broken into four unique reading levels, elementary, inspectional, analytical, and syntopical. Each of these has distinct features that are helpful at many different stages of reading.…
The book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis brought up numerous points about human nature, Christian belief, and the Christian lifestyle. While I enjoyed learning more about facets of Christianity which I had never thought about before, I found the writing style to be rather boring. Lewis makes several comparisons when making a single point, so following his logic was rather difficult. However, when it comes down to the points that Lewis made, the book was well worth reading. My initial thoughts after reading this are of the book’s organization.…
The thing that meant the most for me was having to think about things in a completely different way than I normally do. The readings and discussion questions in this course challenged my ideas and perspectives and allowed me to push the boundaries on how I currently think of my existence, reality and the universe. Since metaphysics is the study of existence and the foundations of our worldview, this course has helped to broaden my thinking and has given me the ability to understand that there is a deeper meaning to life. This course ultimately gave me the ability to interpret and understand the world and the reality that I live in. What challenged me to stretch my mind in this course was having to question our existence in the universe and…
While the video was only appeared once, I found that peer revision time of three to four people was very helpful when I needed to be refreshed of what interpretation meant. The revision groups helped me with my essay and where I could I improve, all while forcing me to ask questions when I am confused. In a way, I was glad because I was more comfortable to speak up about criticisms through them due to the fact that most of them were the same age as me. They had taken chances to explain interpretation through my essay so I would see it better and where I could apply such information to improve for my next revision. Then, when it was my turn to read their papers, I was able to see how they approached their claims through evidence and where they…
“Three Little Words” is a memoir that shares the story of a girl named Ashley Rhodes-Courter, who spent 10 years in the foster care system. Ashley and her younger brother, Luke, were removed from their birth mother, Lorraine, when Ashley was only 3 years old. She was placed in 14 different homes before she had a permanent address. There was a lot that could be absorbed from Ashley’s story, but one thing that stood out to me is how heavily childhood experiences impacted the lives of many characters in this book. In the late 1960s, John Bowlby proposed his theory of attachment.…
I would say that the chapter was interesting because it caused me to have a better understanding of what free will could consist of. The concept of free will never crossed my mind and it really did not interested me until I read this chapter. I understood that without people thinking that they had free will we would believe that we have no freedom to do as we like. The arguments about free will also interested me because they present problems that lead to an understanding of what free will could be. Although, I did find some parts to be perplexing.…
I chose the book 10- Minute Mindfulness: 71 Simple Habits for Living in the Present Moment for my book review. The title of the book intrigued me because I struggle with stress, anxiety and the need to have everything planned out and perfect for the future. So, I decided to give this book a read because I would love to be able to live in the moment positively and enjoy my life and children instead of constantly worrying about the what-ifs and trying to pencil in every detail of the day ahead of me. .…
I had been very excited to take Introduction to Philosophy and to my pleasant surprise I have been able to walk out of the course much more enlightened than I had entered it. When one begins to explore the areas of what it takes to create a meaningful life it forces you to dig deep within yourself to critically think through these issues. There have been three specific philosophical issues that I have gained a deeper insight to, the nature of the self, freedom of choice and issues on ethics and morality. If I am anything like most people, I bet we will concise that we are not exactly sure what it is that makes us who we are.…
