The history of Pharmacists is a long one. It all started back when the juice from a succulent plant was used to treat a wound (Krantz). Ancient Greece made a clear separation between Pharmacist and Physician (Krantz). The duties were different and the products were also. Pharmacists were given the material to make and distribute drugs, and the physician would handle the patient. Here in America, Benjamin Franklin was the first to recognize pharmacies in hospitals, taking a huge step by assigning an apothecary to the Pennsylvania Hospital (Krantz). After World War II, the role of a pharmacist evolved once more, changing their duties from just distributing basic medication to sometimes mixing their own concoctions to serve a different need. Pharmacists have several responsibilities that they must take care of. Pharmacists are required to, obviously, distribute medication and educate patients of said drug. However, often times a pharmacist who works in a community field such as Walmart or Shopko, and maybe in some clinics or hospitals, may be required to give out vaccinations. Some pharmacists are in charge of mixing drugs to create entirely new drugs, along with this they must test it for possible side effects. They may also be required to monitor the health of some patients to ensure that they are following the dosage directions and sometimes assess patients with undiagnosed symptoms
