Before you begin pavement-sweeping operations, it is important you obtain and interpret emergency procedures. Having a thorough understanding of the emergency procedures involved on site and in your work place gives you the ability to prepare for any potential situation, such as a fire, accident or other emergency.

OBTAIN AND INTERPRET EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
It is a requirement under Safe Work Australia that every workplace has an Emergency Plan available to its workers. An Emergency Plan should cover:
• The appropriate response in an emergency.
• Evacuation procedures.12
• How and when emergency services will be notified (as early as possible).12
• Details of medical treatment and assistance.12

Your interpretation of this plan will come from an understanding of hazards in the workplace, and how they will be managed.12 In this way, emergencies such as fire, explosions, medical emergencies, situations involving hazardous chemicals, natural disasters and potential factors such as bomb threats or armed confrontation or intruders are all accounted for. 12

Furthermore, your interpretation of this plan will rely on your overall understanding of how the legislation of industry bodies, unions and state government impact your workplace, and how this directly affects the unique factors within it.
