Success is a complex word. It’s meanings are ambiguous, meaning one thing to an individual and meaning something else to another. A quote by Booker T. Washington provides a satisfying generalization of the word. For example, a man whose enormous wealth consists of money wholly inherited from his father is not considered successful but a man who has worked hard, dug himself out of poverty and now lives a humble life is considered successful. The man in the first example has lived a life full of luxury and has faced close to no obstacles but the second man, even though not as prominent as the first man, has lived a successful life because he had to face many obstacles to reach the point he is at now. Success is not measured by the amount of money one has or the social status one obtains, but rather the amount the …show more content…
Over her 16 years of childhood she has faced many hardships from hunger, lack of clothes and a not having a warm location to reside in during the winter. But without doubt, she is in no way unsuccessful. She eluded poverty and did not let other people affect her wellbeing. What she has done was built a living by herself and learnt to provide for herself through her unnatural experiences. Jeannette Walls is the textbook example of success being measured by overcoming obstacles, not her position in life.
Examples of success can also be found outside the book. Walt Disney, a film producer and cofounder of the Walt Disney Company, is a great example of success. He, according to Ashley MacQuarrie of Learning Liftoff, faced many obstacles in life. They include his education ending in 8th grade and many failed attempts at being a successful entrepreneur. Today, he is considered one of the most successful people to have ever lived as stated by Biography Online.
