Obstacles of an Education How difficult is it to obtain an education? Many would say it is very difficult because of all the hours of studying and going to class, but what if one does not have the ability to gain an education? Millions of people in this world are currently going through that problem. This is a major obstacle for many people. Most people will agree that an education is essential to be successful. The problem with everyone needing an education is many people do not have the capability to attain one. After years of practicing he eventually became the articulate leader many of us remember him being, “I could for the first time pick up a book and read and now begin to understand what the book was saying. Anyone who has read a great deal can imagine the new world that opened” (Malcolm X). Imagine all the work Malcom X went through to become more intelligent. In a way Malcolm X had a slight advantage over many people who are trying to gain an education. How is that an advantage? Malcom X goes on to say in his writings that he spent all day and at times all night reading and writing, “Let me tell you something: from then until I left that prison, in every free moment I had, if I was not reading in the library, I was reading on my bunk. You couldn’t have gotten me out of books with a wedge” (Malcolm X). Many of us do not have that extra time. Of course, no one wants to be in jail, but in the terms of having ‘free time’ it is a benefit. We spend most of our days at jobs or with our families, to think we could spend the same amount of time as Malcolm X did, reading and …show more content…
On the other hand, we need to understand that becoming more intelligent was Malcom X’s number one objective in life. He did not spend his time doing other futile things. Life often gets in the way when we are trying to accomplish our goals. Those who are looking to further their education need to ask themselves, ‘Am I willing to put this goal in front of everything else in my life?’ This brings up another issue with people trying to continue their education, time. Most people would agree when saying there is not enough time in the day. This is the same for people who do not have enough time to go to school. There could be many reasons as to why this is, having a job or raising a family are two of the biggest reasons people do not have enough time to learn. Being in charge of a family would make it very difficult to put in the necessary time and effort for school work. Also, having a job makes it more difficult to be in school, especially if that individuals is working full time. Every hour working is taking away from time to be studying. On the other hand, everyone knows that the world runs on money. Not too many people are going to leave their job or take less hours

In an ideal society, access to education would be portrayed as a top priority. All individuals with the desire to further pursue their education would have the necessary resources to do so. Unfortunately, this is not how societies ideals have been structured. Instead, the younger generation associates education as an unnecessary expense. This ideal fluctuates the vision set by sociologists like Marx/Engels, and Durkheim to achieve a good society, and limits upward mobility.…

The first memory most people have of learning to read is a lighthearted and comforting memory. Most of us might not even remember the exact time, or what we read when we first learned to read. However, as most of us will be unable to relate to the following two authors, who both had hardship and serious internal struggles while trying to master what most would consider a necessity to function in society. In “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” Sherman Alexie begins sharing his experiences as a young and motivated reader.…

Kyle Hill, a science writer and communicator, observes that “We tend to accept information that confirms our prior beliefs and ignore or discredit information that does not. This confirmation bias settles over our eyes like distorting spectacles for everything we look at.” Confirmation bias, can affect the way that we interpret information, and the opinions we make based on the way we interpret information. In Malcom X’s “Learning to Read”, he examines the importance of his self-education, and the information he absorbed while in jail. He learns that throughout world history many atrocities have effected people of color.…

While the Malcolm X article is about how he grew up with a very poor education and didn’t realize how much power being educated had over a person’s life until he was sent to prison and realized he was basically illiterate and viewed by the world as a no good uneducated street thug. And that once he became educated and aware of how black people were being treated he stood up for what he believed was…

Students who identify with gender or racial minority groups may see their group membership as an obstacle to academic success. Additionally, other theories suggest that the academic achievement minority-group children are jointly affected by cultural conflict both inside and outside of school (Nasir & Hand, 2006). These students may face obstacles such as nonsupport at home, parents who do not value education, or lack of relationships with teachers and peers that encourage learning (Nelson, 2014). A study by Marsh (2008) suggests that changing the organizational systems and structures of a classroom could have a positive impact on both students of color and students living in poverty.…

Martin Luther king Jr gave speeches of hope and positivity to represent to the people what life would be like if everyone was treated fairly. He could have given speeches that sounded frustrated or mad, but he didn’t want to make the situation worse by adding more violence. Just like the other iconic figures, he decided to use his voice to spread a message of positivity and peace. Since Martin Luther king Jr used his voice in a hopeful and positive way, it allowed civil rights to become less of a dream but more of a reality. Malcolm X, on the other hand was not looking to keep the peace between whites and blacks.…

People all around the world may not be made for a life crammed with schoolwork and hour-long lectures performed by educators. How the public chooses to perceive and tackle life should be the prerogative of oneself. While it is arguable that people should strive to complete their education, everybody should do what is logical for themselves. Students should not be required to remain in public school until they receive a high school diploma or a GED because people may have difficult financial, home, or personal situations.…

When one imagines a prison, it is rare that one imagines an inmate sitting in his cell late at night, pushing himself to learn to read and write, and ignoring the prison’s “lights out” rule in order to gain more knowledge. In this way, Malcolm X has already defied the stereotype of the “typical” prisoner. Malcolm X writes, “My homemade education gave me, with every additional book that I read, a little bit more sensitivity to the deafness, dumbness, and blindness that was afflicting the black race in America.” (Malcolm X pp.642-643) It is Malcolm X’s belief that had he gone down a different path in life and pursued a college degree, he would not have had the dedication to learning that he discovered in prison. Malcolm X closes his narrative with this last statement: “Where else but in a prison could I have attacked my ignorance by being able to study intensely sometimes as much as fifteen hours a day?”…

In my opinion Malcolm X is more of a talker than a doer. In his article he discusses different subjects without one outstanding goal he is trying to achieve. Like when he talks about revolution he stats “I’m telling you, you don't know what a revolution is. ‘Cause when you find out what it is, you’ll get back in the alley; you’ll get out of the way.” (Malcom X 2)…

One of the many benefits of having an education is that it gives you the opportunity to make laudable achievements in your life, or for the world. These days, an education—more importantly, a college diploma—will give you the upper hand in the real world, most of the time, that being a pecuniary advantage in the business world. Though the journey can be a little tedious at times, in the end, having that diploma is always worth it. For some, attaining a good education comes easily, and they are able to become the precocious person that everyone wants to be.…

Around the world, school-aged children experience different educational scenarios depending on their intelligence, race, and socio-economic status. Some are denied an education altogether, and others receive the poorest education that can be provided. Presently, Americans value education, and it is commonly equated with a successful career. According to recent statistics, “As of May 2012, the nationwide unemployment rates for U.S. citizens over the age of 25 by educational level were: no high school diploma 13%, with a high school diploma 8.1%, with a bachelor’s degree or higher 3.9%”(Colombo, Cullen, Lisle). Receiving this more advanced education is often affected by outside barriers.…
