Siddhartha 's journey to the Truth was by no means a simple one. The beginning of the novel, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, starts off by introducing Siddhartha 's struggle; "Siddhartha had begun to feel the seeds of discontent within in him... He had begun to suspect that that his worthy father and his other teachers, the wise Brahmins, had already passed on to him the bulk and best of their knowledge" (Hesse 5). Similarly, Neo, the main character in the Wachowskis ' The Matrix, feels a similar discontentment with his world, even though he is incredibly intelligent. Siddhartha is a successful scholar and Thomas Anderson is a successful computer programmer, both men have vast amounts of knowledge about the world but something else on a different level is nagging them.…
It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

Island of a Thousand Mirrors One of the key transitions that drove Saraswathi’s transformation was the loss of her family at the age of sixteen. Amma, her mother, explains, “You have to go from here, my daughter. We can’t keep you with us anymore. You must go to the training camp. Learn to fight.…
In chapter 22, when Jeanne Wakatsuki is reflecting on her experience at Manzanar, she states, “Papa’s life ended at Manzanar… Until this trip I had not been able to admit that my own life really began there” (150). What Jeanne means when she says this is open for interpretation; some may say that her view of the experience changes over time as she matures and begins to think differently about it and finally she is able to make this statement, contrary to her words that Papa and his life are done for at Manzanar. This evidence is from the point of view of Jeanne thirty years after her internment.…
Hunting Obstacle By: Mikel Vance A very hard obstacle I used to have problems overcoming was hunting. Some reasons hunting was an obstacle for me to overcome was it was hard to shoot the gun, hard to figure out where exactly to hit the animal, and staying extremely quiet when stalking an animal. Part of the reason I saw hunting as a obstacle was because I had troubles learning to shoot the gun. One reason I had problems shooting the gun was because I had problems keeping the gun in one specific spot while aiming at an animal.…
Nearly all of human culture has some form of the stories of heroes or the epics, tragedies and fairy tales written about them. This type of story is so ubiquitous that we have a name to identify the common pattern that these hero stories follow: The Hero's Journey. It is a very effective method of writing stories and many stories follow the pattern unintentionally. In the novel Siddhartha, Hermann Hesse utilizes the Hero's Journey pattern to draw a parallel between its story and other "monomyths", particularly the stories of numerous important religious figures including the Buddha, Mohammed and Jesus. A monomyth does not necessarily have to fulfil every part of the pattern and Siddhartha provides examples for very nearly every step of the journey, sometimes even fulfilling the qualifications for relatively obscure steps very particularly.…

As time progressed, laws have been changed to allow more rights women and to fit the modernized afghanistan today. Through the character portrayal of Soraya and Franzana in The Kite Runner, Hosseini is able to help illustrate how men were more superior to women during that time. Amir’s and Soraya’s relationship struggled throughout The Kite Runner due to Afghan cultural believes, in which men are completely superior over women. As Amir’s relationship was building with Soraya’s, Hosseini uses Amir’s thoughts to help show the reader the inequality by writing, “ And she would bear the brunt of that poison, not me--I was fully aware of the Afghan double standard that favored my gender” (Hosseini).…
The settler makes history and is conscious of making it. And because he constantly refers to the history of his mother country, he clearly indicates that he himself is the extension of that mother-country. Thus the history which he writes is not the history of the country which he plunders but the history of his own nation in regard to all that she skims off, all that she violates and starves. (Fanon 49) Resistance literature is a magnificent form of how people who have been once colonialized can stand and fight for their own identity. People use literature as a means of defending themselves, explaining what they have been through and how the colonizer oppresses and divides them.…
