Obstacles In English Class

In the quote by Christopher Columbus he states “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination” I thought this quote pertained to me because I know this year there are going to be many obstacles in English class, but if I just push myself I know I can reach my goal. As a reader and writer, I believe that I have grown stronger over the years. In the past, I did not like reading at all I would try to get by with reading as little of the stories as possible in order to pass. I felt this way until this summer when I started to read the books for English. I realized that not all books are boring and feel as if it takes forever to get through. The books I read over the summer got …show more content…
Just the other day I was looking through some of my essays from eighth grade. Back then I wondered why I didn’t get a good grade, but now I see that I would just go in circles and I would use the same words over and over again for example the word “you”. I do not find writing for pleasure fun. Although sometimes if I have had a bad day and I have no one to talk to I usually write how I feel in a notebook or on my computer to get it out of my mind. After I write it all down I will end up deleting it or getting rid of it. I do not always get A’s when writing, but I don’t fail my essays either. In my opinion, I would say that I am an average writer, but I hope to change that this year in English 11. One of the major things I struggle with in writing would have to be my run-on sentences. I have always had an issue with not knowing when to put periods and commas. I hope by the end of this year I will be able to say I have mastered not having any run-on …show more content…
The best study habit for me would have to be writing things down over and over again. Such as vocabulary I will write the word and its definition down until I can memorize it. This helps me because I am a kinesthetic and visual learner and I have to see what I need to say to remember it. I am most likely to read at night when I am about to go to bed. I also like to read in the car on the way to places. This summer I took an eight-hour car ride to the beach so I got a lot of reading done. I can be a shy type of person at times especially when it comes to asking questions so it will be rare if I ask for

I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

When I attended college for the first time, I was an excellent writer. My professors would read my writings out loud as a good example of what they expected from the rest of the class. As it pertains to my writing, I believe that my strengths are possessing an active vocabulary and the ability to transition sentences. In contrast, my weaknesses are run-on sentences and using passive voice quotes. During the writing process, I use a thesaurus to build my vocabulary which helps transition one sentence to another.…

This was the first book I truly enjoy reading and made me realize the importance of reading as a whole and how it effects my academic future. Reading was really never boring to me. Due to the fact I had some really entertaining English teachers over the years. When the teacher would read or play the tape of the book and we had to follow along that wasn’t a problem for me, that in fact made the books more enjoyable and fun to listen to. I Especially notice that when my English teacher for 7th grade Mrs. Matthew would change her voice to match the character, setting or the scene we’re at in the book.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

I couldn 't find a way to make myself interested in the things I was reading. Every year there was a new summer reading assignment and every year I didn’t read it. I would try to but along the way I would end up opening Sparknotes and reading the summaries of each book instead.
